Rangers appoint Russell Martin as manager to end long search for new boss as Ibrox revolution continues

RANGERS have appointed former Southampton boss Russell Martin as their new manager.

The 39-year-old has ended months of speculation about the vacancy by accepting the job at Ibrox.

Steven Gerrard was favourite at one point but dropped out of the running[/caption]

SunSport were first to tell you back on February 22 – the day Philippe Clement was sacked – that Martin was a serious contender.

Since then a number of names were linked with the position, including former Real Madrid assistant Davide Ancelotti and ex-Rangers boss Steven Gerrard.

But it is ex-Light Blues defender Martin who has made the most convincing pitch to the new American owners at Ibrox to land the job.

His name never seemed to go away even despite links with Leicester City.

We told you at the start of last week that Martin remained a serious contender and was set for talks to make a fresh pitch for the position.

Ancelotti, son of legendary father Carlo, made it clear that Rangers was his preferred choice but a decision had to be made quickly.

That was before it was announced that the new US consortium, chairman Andrew Cavenagh and 49ers Enterprises, would take control of the club last Friday.

New sporting director Kevin Thelwell said only on Monday how Rangers are closing in on a new manager.

And Martin who had a loan spell at Ibrox seven years ago has emerged from the pack of candidates.

He guided Southampton into the Premier League with a play-off win over Leeds United at Wembley a year ago.

But the Saints dropped straight back down after failing to recover from a disastrous start with one win in 16 games, which cost Martin his job.

Inside major car brand’s new ‘iconic’ hatchback EV to be built at huge UK factory – as firm raises £5bn to stay afloat

A STRUGGLING car brand has released details of its new electric crossover ahead of a full reveal later this month.

Built at a huge factory in Sunderland, the Nissan Leaf is set to join the market later this year.

The Nissan Leaf has sold 700,000 models since its 2010 debut[/caption]

Now in its third-generation, the electric crossover is scheduled to begin production over the next few months.

The launch comes amid the company’s financial struggles after they announced £4 billion in losses.

As other manufacturers are slowing production on EVs, Nissan’s Sunderland factory is focusing more on these eco-friendly alternatives.

The company has reduced its production from 17 to 10 factories, with an announcement that 20,000 jobs will be lost.

Its newest model has been announced as part of this focus on EVs.

Global product strategy boss Richard Candler told Autocar that the latest model was informed by customer feedback since the car’s 2010 debut.

He said: “Leaf is an icon for us. It’s one of our core ‘heartbeat’ models.”

First launched in 2010, the Leaf was one of the first mass-market electric cars.

Nissan has sold 700,000 Leafs since 2010, covering over 28 billion kilometres.

Richard added: “We have really substantial, real-world insight about the customer – understanding how their needs have evolved from the early days of Leaf until now.”

The company has substantially changed this version’s shape and positioning, learning from their Mk1 and Mk2 models.

This results in more aerodynamic efficiency, helping to achieve a longer range.

While not being officially announced until the debut later this month, its estimated maximum range is 372 miles.

The new design reflects a wider market shift away from traditional hatchbacks towards higher-riding cars.

It means that the Nissan Leaf could rival cars like the Skoda Elroq.

While few details have been announced so far, European product boss François Bailly said they were emphasising “real-world range.”

This means they have prioritised range and aerodynamics with the design to ensure motorists get the most out of their EV.

Global design boss Alfonso Albaisa added: “It’s very modern, simple and nice.

“We wanted something tailored, handsome, well-proportioned, with a super-tech interior that feels open and cool.”

It will include features like an electrochromic dimming panoramic roof with heat shielding, creating more headspace by removing the need for physical blinds.

Its in-car systems are equipped with their updated Car and Connected Service platform, using a Google-based infotainment system and advanced driver assistance systems to “make your life easier.”

The new model is launching amidst the company’s financial problems.

Over the last few weeks, Nissan has announced plans to cut 20,000 jobs, and reported £4billion in losses leading to an £1 billion government bailout.

To save on costs, they plan on closing down seven of their factories, with its only UK based factory focusing more on electric cars.

During this turbulent period, production on some models has stalled.

The company may need to sell its £500 million Yokohama-based global headquarters to combat its extensive losses.

‘I’m really weak’ – Chris Kamara gives health update as Sky Sports legend reveals new role

CHRIS KAMARA admitted “I’m really weak” after giving a health update while securing a new role.

The Sky Sports legend, 67, was forced to step back from broadcasting two years after being diagnosed with apraxia of speech (AOS).

Chris Kamara admits ‘I’m really weak’ after landing a new role[/caption]

The condition sees sufferers struggle to speak as the brain is unable to properly control the muscles used to form words.

Kamara exclusively told The Sun last month that he had travelled to Mexico for treatment.

He also suffers from dyspraxia, which affects his balance and coordination.

And now, the fan favourite has managed to land himself a new role.

For one day only, Kamara will be serving free chip butties at Camden Market with Burton’s Fish ’N’ Chips on Friday June 6.

The surprise gig was carefully considered before being accepted by Kamara because of his AOS and dyspraxia.

And he admits his health battle has left him feeling “really weak” overall.

Kamara told The Star: “I’m choosy these days.

“That’s what’s happened with the work because even though I’ve got the acceptance of my condition, I still don’t want to put myself in a situation where it comes back to bite me.

“So I’m not like the old Chris Kamara who would say yes to the opening of an envelope.

What is apraxia of speech?

Apraxia of speech is a condition which makes talking difficult, with sufferers knowing what they’d like to say, but having trouble communicating their words.

The NHS says that the condition can be extremely frustrating for people.

They explained: “Frequently the person with apraxia will have difficulties with conversational speech. However they may be good at ‘automatic’ speech tasks such as counting, swearing, repeating rhymes, greetings and farewell.

It’s usually caused by damage to the left side of the brain, such as a stroke.

The condition does not affect a person’s understanding and the symptoms of the condition can vary occurring to the severity of the disorder.

The main symptoms are:

  • being able to say a word correctly one minute and then not the next
  • difficulty at the beginning of words
  • greater difficulty with longer words
  • aware of mistakes but unable to correct them
  • speaking slowly
  • being better at ‘automatic tasks’ such as counting and singing.

“Whereas now I’m a bit more choosy and will I put myself in a situation where it won’t work out alongside my apraxia, I have dyspraxia, which affects your balance.

“So I’m weak, really weak, and you know, going down these stairs isn’t great.

“Going up these stairs is fine, but going down these stairs, the brain tells you you’re going to fall even though you probably won’t, so you have to hold on to the banister and getting on planes and things like that.”

On his dyspraxia, Kamara added: “Walking is fine but the thing is if I trip I can’t put my arms out anymore to stop my fall, so if I was riding a bike, when you stop, the brain won’t allow your feet to go down and stop you falling.

“You just fall over the sides, it’s crazy, but the brain is so complex, it’s amazing.

“I didn’t realise the compartments of the brain, where if you talk in an accent. So (for me) I advise speaking in a Scottish accent.

“The flow is quicker than my normal speeds, which is crazy, but that’s the brain for it.”

Helen Flanagan reveals scary health issue that’s left her lips ‘numb’

HELEN Flanagan revealed her swollen lips as she opened up on a health issue that left them “numb.”

The concerned mum-of-three, 34, took to her Instagram page to express her concern over her heath horror.

Helen, 34, admitted her mouth felt ‘numb’ after chomping down on the fruit[/caption]

Helen pulled on a blue jumper and brushed her blonde locks into a high bun with a scrunchie for her video clip.

She wore minimal make-up but her sore, chapped lips, which appeared to have increased in size, couldn’t be missed.

The Coronation Street actress told how her daughter, middle child Delilah, six, had been in charge of the shopping list that week, and “wanted cherries.”

As she prepped the fruit for her three kids she said she thought: “‘Oh these cherries look nice,’ so I had one.

“And straight away I was like, ‘this was really itchy.’

“My throat started itching

“And then my lips, they literally feel like numb,” as she showed them off to the camera

The Rosie Webster star added: “I never knew that i was allergic to cherries,” before her clip played out.

According to the NHS, the first signs of anaphylaxis and allergies are usually a swelling of the throat and tongue.

Yet the extent of her health condition is unclear.

MUM SHAMED

The scary moment came after the parent was cruelly mum-shamed – with trolls urging her to “put your kids first.”

“A sexy boss b**ch one for Monday morning,” newly-single Helen captioned a recent sizzling post, in which she promoted her new summer range with Nikki Lingerie.

And while the comments section was filled with remarks praising Helen’s images, there were also those who had something to say about the fact she was sharing such public, revealing pictures considering she’s got three kids.

What do we know about Helen Flanagan’s new boyfriend Robbie Talbot?

HELEN Flanagan has revealed that she is in a new relationship.

While appearing on Celebs Go Dating, she confessed that she was already taken – here’s everything we know about her boyfriend Robbie Talbot.

Helen has opened up about her relationship with former footballer Robbie Talbot.

He is a decade older than the actress.

Robbie was born in Liverpool on October 31, 1979 which is how he earned his nickname Halloween Hitman in football.

He has played for a series of non-league teams such as Burton Albion, Burscough and Morcambe.

He then became a coach at Ashton in 2010.

Robbie is retired from football.

He left his role as Assistant Manager at Ashton due to family and work commitments in 2011.

It’s unknown what he has done for work since leaving football.

Helen admitted that she was dating Robbie while appearing on Celebs Go Dating.

In a first for the show, it has been revealed that her relationship had to be written into the series due to requirements that those taking part have to be single.

The pair went public at her birthday party on August 10, 2024.

“Please put your kids first, it’s embarrassing for them,” one wrote.

SAD SPLIT

It has also been a rough time for Helen, who recently split with her footballer boyfriend Robbie Talbot after a year of dating.

She told the ex sports ace things “weren’t working” after a year together – and after initially saying she wanted his kids.

Friends now say the mum of three instead now wants to concentrate on her career and family.

A source told us: “They want different things in life. She has just landed a new acting job and is trying to juggle work projects with the kids.

“She sat him down two weeks ago and said, ‘This isn’t working’. It was a grown-up chat.

“She just wants to be on her own for a while although she still has feelings for him.”

Helen split from Scott Sinclair, dad of her three kids, in 2022.
