The order you eat the food on your plate could be key to losing weight, say experts

WHETHER a quick weekday dinner or an elaborate lunchtime feast, meals typically involve a combination of a main dish, vegetables, and often a starch.

And if you’re looking to lose weight, the order you eat each of these components is important, say researchers.

Researchers from Stanford University tested if eating a dose of fibre, protein or fat before carbohydrates impacted blood sugar spikes.

Frequent blood sugar spikes can lead to weight gain and increased risk of obesity because the body is forced to store excess glucose as fat.

But the experts found this could be avoided by changing not what people eat, but what order they eat foods in.

In the study, the scientists looked at 55 volunteers, half of which has signs of pre-diabetes – a condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.

They were given a meal consisting of rice on three separate occasions, and had to wear devices to measure blood sugar levels, known as continuous glucose monitors.

In the 10 minutes before each meal, participants were given either a fibre supplement, protein in the form of boiled egg whites, or dairy fat from crème fraîche.

When the researchers looked at the results, they found eating fibre or the egg protein lowered the blood sugar spike that came from eating the energy-dense rice.

Eating the fat before the rice didn’t lower the blood sugar spike but did delay it from happening.

This suggests eating fibre-rich foods like vegetables and proteins like eggs before enjoying carbohydrates could prevent blood sugar surges that can lead to increased hunger.

Professor Michael Snyder, an expert in genetics and author of the study, recommended dieters eat their meals in a specific order.

He said: “Eating carbohydrates later in a meal is still a good idea even though it had not yet been sorted out whether it is best to eat protein, fat or fibre before carbohydrates.

“Eat your salad or hamburger before your French fries.”

Carbohydrates are naturally found in a wide variety of foods, including grains (bread, rice, pasta), fruits (apples, bananas), vegetables (potatoes, corn), legumes (beans, lentils), dairy products (milk, yogurt), and starchy vegetables (sweet potatoes, peas).

They’re vital for providing energy to the body, particularly for the brain and nervous system.

They also play a role in maintaining muscle tissue, supporting healthy digestion, and providing essential micronutrients.

And can help regulate mood, promote heart health, and assist in managing weight.

The NHS recommends carbohydrates make up 50-60 per cent of a person’s daily calorie intake.

For weight maintenance, women generally aim for 45-60g of carbs per meal, while men aim for 60-75g.

For weight loss, women may reduce this to 30-45g per meal, and men to 45-60g.

A good starting point is to have about a quarter of your plate as starchy carbohydrates (like potatoes, bread, rice) at each meal, adds the NHS.

Other science backed ways to lose weight

Calorie deficit

To lose weight, it’s essential to consume fewer calories than you burn. This can be achieved through a combination of diet and exercise.

Prioritise protein

Protein-rich foods can help increase satiety, promote muscle growth, and support weight loss.

Increase fibre intake

Fibre-rich foods can aid in weight loss by promoting feelings of fullness and helping regulate blood sugar levels.

Limit processed foods and added sugars

Reducing the intake of these foods can significantly impact calorie intake and contribute to weight loss.

Engage in regular exercise

Aerobic exercises (like walking, running, or cycling) and strength training (like lifting weights) are both beneficial for weight loss.

Prioritise sleep

Adequate sleep is important for hormone regulation, appetite control, and overall weight management.

Manage stress

Stress can lead to unhealthy eating habits and contribute to weight gain. Finding healthy ways to manage stress is crucial.

Halving violence against women and girls will require more cash, watchdogs say

More investment will be needed if the government wants to achieve its promise to cut violence against women and girls in half, Keir Starmer has been warned.

A major spending review set to be announced by Chancellor Rachel Reeves next week will decide budgets for government departments for years to come.

Two senior government watchdogs have written to the Prime Minister to say those plans must include more funding for helping victims and survivors.

Dame Nicole Jacobs, the Domestic Abuse Commissioner for England and Wales, and Baroness Newlove, the Victims Commissioner for England and Wales, were behind the letter.

According to BBC News, they wrote that with ‘bold and ambitious investment, we can finally tackle the systemic stain of violence and abuse’ and the ‘cost of inaction is one this country can no longer afford’.

They warned that ‘piecemeal policies’ were being caused by ‘funding cuts and scaled back ambition’.

The Home Office, which is responsible for victims, is reportedly still in negotiations with the Treasury over its funding deal in the review.

Yesterday, Safeguarding Minister Jess Phillips pointed to extra investment in County Lines operations as she announced a plan to outlaw coerced internal concealment.

Funding for the police, also controlled by the Home Office, has come under the microscope in recent days with Metropolitan Police head Sir Mark Rowley writing to the PM to express his concerns.

In his letter, he warned any budget cuts would have ‘far-reaching consequences’.

Asked about his intervention, Reeves said: ‘We will be increasing spending on police in the spending review next week, so that’s not a decision or a choice that I would recognise.’

Campaign group End Violence Against Women said on Monday they are ‘yet to see any detail’ on how the government’s commitment to halving violence against women and girls will be measured.

The coalition, which has worked with Metro on the This Is Not Right campaign, said: ‘We need a plan from the top that sets out clearly how the government intends to tackle this national crisis.’

Earlier today, Reeves tried to temper expectations ahead of her announcement next Wednesday by saying there were ‘good things I’ve had to say no to’.

The Chancellor said: ‘Not every department will get everything that they want next week and I have had to say no to things that I want to do too.’

Chelsea issue telling response after Paul Scholes makes wild Moises Caicedo claim

Chelsea issued a telling response after Paul Scholes’ comments about midfielder Moises Caicedo caused a stir on social media.

After a mixed first season at Stamford Bridge, Caicedo has grown into his role at Chelsea, featuring in all 38 Premier League games and thriving in Enzo Maresca’s side.

The Ecuadorian international was deservedly crowned Chelsea’s Player of the Year, having helped guide the club back to the Champions League as well as scoring in the final of their Conference League win over Real Betis.

But not everyone was convinced with Caicedo’s impact for the Blues this season, most notably former Manchester United midfielder Scholes.

Speaking on the latest episode of The Overlap with SkyBet, Scholes said: ‘I think a lot of people talk about Caicedo. “He’s played 38 games”. Brilliant, what an achievement.

‘But was there much quality? Did he create a lot? Did he control a lot of games for Chelsea? I don’t remember that.

‘I think there’s an era now, with midfielders especially, where you can go through seasons and games without really contributing.’

Many fans on social media were surprised by Scholes’ comments, and it appears even Chelsea were keen to issue a rebuttal.

Posting on the club’s X account, the Blues posted a thread of statistics highlighting that Caicedo had made the most appearances (38) and won the most tackles (114) of any Chelsea player in the Premier League last season.

Only four players made more tackles than Caicedo in the league last campaign, with Marc Cucurella the next best in a Chelsea shirt with 67.

‘One of the worst bits of punditry I’ve ever seen’

Some fans on social media were less cryptic with their rebutals towards Scholes for his comments.

‘This is genuinely one of the worst bits of punditry I’ve ever seen. And if Paul Scholes has said this he quite simply doesn’t watch much football,’ one user wrote on X.

Another added: ‘You can’t watch Chelsea’s games, and do even a 30-second stat check, and think Moises Caicedo that was a star for Brighton, and now Chelsea doesn’t “contribute a lot”. The eye test doesn’t lie. The stats don’t lie. He’s wrong’.

Even Caicedo’s fellow teammates have been vocal with their praise about his consistent levels of performance this season.

‘He’s a machine. From the start of the season, he has been our best player,’ Cole Palmer told Sky Sports last month.

‘Wins the ball back all the time. Always 100 per cent everyday. Humble, nice to everyone and everyone loves him.’
