The ‘healthy’ kitchen staple you use every day ‘that’s making you FAT’, scientists warn

FROM salad dressings to bread dips and roasted veg, olive oil has long been celebrated as a kitchen staple with powerful health benefits.

A cornerstone of the Mediterranean diet, olive oil was hailed as an elixir of youth and health in ancient Greece.

And swathes of new research suggest it lives up to the hype, slashing the risk of disease and early death.

But scientists now believe oleic acid, a common fat found in olive oil, helps fat cells grow and multiply, potentially driving weight gain faster than other oils.

US researchers behind the study urged home cooks to “moderate” their olive oil intake, “especially high-risk individuals.”

“If someone is at risk for heart disease, high levels of oleic acid may not be a good idea,” they wrote.

This comes amid growing concern from experts who warn that guzzling too much of the golden liquid may raise cholesterol and increase the risk of heart disease.

In the new study, published in Cell Reports, scientists fed mice diets enriched with specific fats found in olive oil, coconut oil, lard, peanut oil, milk, and soybeans.

They found oleic acid activated a protein called AKT2 while suppressing another, LXR, triggering the formation of new fat cells.

“You can think of the fat cells as an army,” said study co-author Dr Michael Rudolph, assistant professor of biochemistry and physiology at the University of Oklahoma.

“When you give oleic acid, it initially increases the number of ‘fat cell soldiers’ in the army, which creates a larger capacity to store excess nutrients,” he added.

“This means that over time, obesity can occur, which can then lead to cardiovascular disease or diabetes if not controlled,” he said.

The researchers admit most people don’t eat olive oil in isolation, they’re mixed into salads and burgers.

But diets high in oleic acid, especially from ultra-processed foods, could be bad news for the heart.

“I think the take-home message is moderation and to consume fats from a variety of different sources,” he said.

“Relatively balanced levels of oleic acid seem to be beneficial, but higher and prolonged levels may be detrimental.

“If someone is at risk for heart disease, high levels of oleic acid may not be a good idea.”

For years, olive oil has been the go-to fat for dietitians and chefs alike.

Just last year another, US study emerged suggesting more than half a tablespoon of olive oil a day can cut Alzheimer’s risk by 28 per cent.

Meanwhile, an NHS trial found that oleic acid could help treat incurable brain tumours.

Celebs and influencers also can’t get enough of it.

Dua Lipa drizzles it on ice cream, and Kourtney Kardashian swears by it as a hair treatment.

Top chef Jamie Oliver is known for generously pouring olive oil over his dishes.

And biohacker Bryan Johnson drinks spoonfuls of olive oil each morning and sells his own brand as part of a pricey anti-ageing plan.

‘Olive oil isn’t something to demonise’

Despite the new findings, Robert Hobson, nutritionist at Healthspan and author of Unprocess Your Family Life, said olive oil is still the “best” choice for everyday cooking, because of its “health benefits”.

“It helps lower cholesterol, because it increases good cholesterol, but lower bad cholesterol,” he told Sun Health.

Cholesterol is a substance found in fats that’s needed to build healthy cells, but can increase the risk of heart disease if levels are too high.

“You’ve also got things like pleocanthal, which is that peppery taste in olive oil, and that helps to reduce inflammation as well. “

But people should use it “sparingly” because it is a fat, he said.

“You only need a teaspoon in a non-stick pan to cook food,” he explained.

“And I think people do chuck it in very liberally.

“While it’s good for you, obviously, you can have loads of it, then it’s going to encourage weight gain.”

He added: “People in the Mediterranean have been using it for hundreds and hundreds of years and we recommend that diet as one of the healthiest diets.

“I just think it’s not a food that we should be demonising.”

How to follow the Mediterranean diet

The Mediterranean diet is rich in plants – think nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes.

The main fat is olive oil (usually extra virgin), and the diet usually includes moderate intake of fish, poultry, dairy, eggs and alcohol.

Other meat, sweets, beer, processed foods and refined grains are kept to a minimum.

Features of a Mediterranean lifestyle that may also benefit a person’s health include sharing meals with others, consuming red wine and flavouring foods with herbs and spices rather than salt.

A typical day following a Mediterranean diet may look like this:

BREAKFAST

Yoghurt with granola, banana, figs, almonds, sunflower seeds and peanut butter

LUNCH

Chicken salad with chickpeas, mozzarella, tomato, cucumber, kale, spinach, onion and a slice of wholemeal bread and extra virgin olive oil

DINNER

Grilled sea bass with brown rice, rocket and a glass of red wine

SNACKS

Apple and almond butter, hummus and crackers and boiled egg

Jake Paul ranks cruiserweight world champions and reveals he is in talks with TWO for shock title fight

JAKE PAUL says he is in talks to fight TWO of the cruiserweight world champions – having ranked the title holders.

The YouTuber-turned-boxer – who only debuted as a professional in 2020 – has set his sights on challenging for 200lb gold after just 12 fights.

Current WBA and WBO unified champ Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez returns on Paul’s June 28 undercard and WBC boss Badou Jack is also on his radar.

Australia’s pound-for-pound star and IBF holder Jai Opetaia is considered the best of the bunch – and Paul is in agreement.

He said: “Zurdo and Jai are probably tied for No1 and I would say Badou is No2.

“But all formidable opponents and we’re in conversations with Zurdo and also Badou as as potential fights for next year.”

Ramirez, 33, faces Cuban Yuniel Dorticos, 39, the night Paul returns against former middleweight world champ Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

And promoter Oscar de la Hoya has talked up a shock bout between Ramirez and Paul in the future.

Meanwhile Jack, 41, opened the door to defending his green and gold belt against the former Disney Channel actor, sparking behind-the-scenes conversations.

But Opetaia, 29, has refused to even entertain a fight with Paul as he looks to cement himself as a legitimate great with his eyes on the heavyweight division.

And Paul was probed on why the Aussie phenomenon was not joined by Ramirez and Jack on his list of potential title fights.

But he said: “It might line up but at the end of the day, there’s 100 people that want to fight me.

“I got Canelo, Gervonta (Davis), Anthony Joshua, Badou, Zurdo, Tommy Fury, KSI, the list keeps on going.

“So it’s just about what makes sense and we’ll see when the negotiations come but  I would for sure entertain a fight with him.”

Paul drops back down to the 14st 4lb cruiserweight limit of 200lbs after bulking up TWO STONE to fight at heavyweight against Mike Tyson.

But he admitted to getting “too fat” at 227lb (16st 2lb) for his points win over Tyson – who controversially returned at aged 58.

“It was just too much and my body wasn’t made for it,” he said.

“And even when I got into the ring I just felt too fat. So cruiserweight is definitely the perfect weight for me.”

Paul was close to agreeing a blockbuster May 3 bout in Las Vegas against Canelo Alvarez, 34, until the Mexican walked away from the deal.

So Paul turned his attention to an exhibition bout against WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis – despite their FIVE STONE difference.

But Davis is now set to rematch Lamont Roach in August after their controversial New York draw in March.

Paul, 28, finally called upon ex-middleweight world champ Chavez Jr, 39, back down at his natural and more comfortable weight.

He said ahead of the June 28 DAZN PPV: “I wanted the hardest and the biggest fights, which was first Canelo then Gervonta fell through.

“And then at any given point in time we’re negotiating or talking with five to six fighters to see who’s down and ready to fight and making a date happen.

“And after Canelo and Gervonta, we were talking to multiple people and Chavez was the one to step up, that made sense for me to stay active and get a fight in June.

“So really it’s just the long line and I just need more time but I’m gonna get to all of these names when the stars aligned.”

New mega £2.7billion airport reveals 24-hour terminal that will ‘rival London’s Heathrow’ with UK flights

IT will soon be even easier for Brits to hop down under as Australia gears up to launch its 24-hour airport.

West Sydney International is expected to rival London’s Heathrow with UK flights, and it’s just 30 miles west of the city.

WSI will be ready to handle 10 million passengers, with plans to expand to 82 million[/caption]

The £2.7billion build has been officially unveiled, with transport and architecture experts praising the design.

The airport will be able to handle 10million passengers, although said there is space to expand further in the future up to 82million.

This includes both domestic and international flights, which will operate 24 hours a day.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development and Local Government Catherine King were at the launch event.

The terminal’s design offers nods to the country’s iconic landmarks like the Blue Mountains, which have been recreated in a ceiling feature.

Sandstone sourced from a quarry on the Central Coast has also been incorporated into the build.

Noting the airport’s design, WSI CEO Simon Hickey said: “Visitors will be welcomed by the stories of Dharug country that will connect the world with more than 60,000 years of Aboriginal culture while also highlighting the vibrant communities of Western Sydney.”

“Global architecture leaders Zaha Hadid Architects, based in London, and one of our nation’s top firms COX Architecture were selected to develop the initial design concepts of WSI following a competition in 2019 that attracted more than 40 international and domestic proposals,” he added.

“Fast forward six years and WSI is on the precipice of launching a seamless and stress-free airport experience unlike any other in Australia, giving our global city a 24-hour international gateway that will continue to create significant economic opportunities for all of Greater Sydney.”

Domestic and international gates will all be under one roof, making connections straightforward and more efficient.

The terminal has more than 6,000 solar panels fixed to its roof, helping to reduce its carbon footprint.

It will also collect and recycle rainfall to be used in airport bathrooms, irrigation, and cooling towers.

Initial designs were created by the famous Zaha Hadid Architects in London, along with Cox Architecture in Australia, with construction using local-based Multiplex.

While the major construction is complete, flights won’t be available until late 2026.

The current Sydney Airport was founded in 1919, making it one of the world’s oldest.

Despite a number of renovations over the years, it is unable to expand much further due to its location.

WSI Airport partners Qantas are currently organising Project Sunrise‘ services for the longest flight in the world.

The Qantas flight service, which will launch non-stop flights between London and Sydney, Australia, expect to be up and running by 2027.

The project was first due to be complete in 2024 but faced delays because of Covid.

Qantas has also revealed that the first route of Project Sunrise won’t be from London to Sydney.

Instead, the aircraft will be used for a three-hour flight from Sydney to Auckland in New Zealand.

Eventually, Qantas will be flying from London to Sydney on a non-stop flight that will take a huge 22 hours, spanning over 10,000 miles.

Currently, the longest flight in the world is from Singapore to New York (Newark), which takes just over 18 hours and spans 9,537 miles.

But once Qantas launches the route, it will be significantly longer.

Recently, Qantas revealed the design of its cabins, and they’re even designed to avoid jet lag.

The way they do this is through lighting, which Qantas says will “promote circadian adaption, sleep, and wake,” at different times of the flight.

The aircraft will even have its own dedicated wellbeing zone – which is a first for the airline.

Chris Hughes and JoJo Siwa in talks for huge reality show together just months after CBB stint and finding love

CHRIS Hughes and JoJo Siwa have had top secret meetings with ITV bosses about getting their own reality show spin off after viewers fell in love with them on Celebrity Big Brother.

The unlikely pair, who stunned fans after striking up a surprise romance following their stint on CBB, are now considering their very own fly-on-the-wall series.

The singer said she is ‘shocked’ at how close the pair have become[/caption]

And telly bosses are convinced the show could go global.

A source spilled to The Sun: “It’s still in the early stages but ITV really think they’d be amazing TV with their own show.

“Fans around the world are obsessed with their relationship and there are so many TikTok accounts devoted to their love story.”

The source continued: “Chris and JoJo are keen too, and while there is no deal signed yet, the talks have been really promising.

“ITV are eyeing up the show to air on ITV2, hopefully later this year once everything is signed on the dotted line.”

Chris, 32, first shot to fame on Love Island in 2017, where he won over the nation – and then-girlfriend Olivia Attwood – with his cheeky charm and blokey banter.

The pair even landed their own ITVBe spin-off, Chris & Olivia: Crackin’ On, before their fiery romance fizzled out.

Since going public with JoJo, 22, the couple have become social media sensations, with fans gushing over their whirlwind love story.

Expect fireworks, TikTok dances, and plenty of Essex-meets-Hollywood chaos if the deal goes ahead.

It was also show how the pair navigate a long-distance relationship.

JoJo was in floods of tears yesterday after leaving the UK following three weeks with Chris.

The US pop star returned to London in May to perform a gig and enjoyed an extended stay with Chris, who she first met in March.

A JoJo fan page shared a meme of a young girl crying in London on Instagram which the pop star reposted and added: “Honestly it was worse than this more tears hahaha.”

It was reminiscent of the first days of their romance when Chris jetted home from the States after a week-long stay, leaving JoJo in tears.

They’re confident they can weather long distance though. JoJo insisted she’ll never break up with Chris calling their relationship “earthquake proof”.

She told Capital Breakfast: “You know what’s interesting? As hectic as life is, and as much as that noise goes on, I feel like Christopher and I discovered this beautiful house together.

“And this house is earthquake proof, and it’s fireproof, and bulletproof.

“And you know, we discovered this house and found the keys, and we took the keys and locked ourselves in, and now it’s like… You know what I mean? I feel like that with myself, I feel like that with him.”

Jordan then quizzed JoJo on whether she had found her ‘happy place’ with Chris.

The US star gushed: “Oh my god, absolutely! We’re having the best time. He’s just the best!

“I was saying this to my parents the other day. Like, I’m decently nice; he makes me look like I’m mean!

“And I’m like known for being nice, that’s the thing. People say to me, ‘Oh, you’re so nice’.

“He makes me we want to be nicer, because he’s such a nice human. He’s the best egg in the batch! I could never get tired of speaking highly of him, he’s just the best.”

The pair spent time with Chris’s parents in the Cotswolds during her stay, enjoying time riding horses.

They couldn’t keep their hands off each other at times with Chris pictured kissing JoJo on the neck.

JoJo admitted she’s “shocked” at how close they have become in such a short period of time.

Speaking to Billboard, she said: “It blows my mind that 30 days ago I would never have even imagined that I would be friends with Chris Hughes, that’s the weirdest thing, much less be one of the closest people too me now in my life who I would die for.

“I think its a combination of the shared experience but also in Big Brother, you have no phone, no outside communication, no distraction, nothing.

“You only have each other. I love connecting and I love people and when someone comes into your life and you enjoy it, you can tell.”
