Poundland slash price of Father’s Day gifts to just 25 PENCE as mums rave there’s some ‘nice bits to get from the kids’

FATHER’S Day is on Sunday and if you haven’t got a gift yet, it could actually work in your favour.

Shoppers have shared how Poundland has slashed the prices of its gifts to just 25p ahead of the big day.

A bargain hunter uploaded a photo of the discounted products that they spotted in store, including 25p ‘best dad’ badges and 50p ‘dad’s taxi’ signs for the car.

Also discounted were beer bottle gift bags, themed mugs and beer openers.

They wrote on the Facebook group Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK: “Poundland this afternoon loads of Father’s Day stuff reduced to 25p/50p.

“Some nice little bits to get from the kids.”

Her post has racked up numerous likes, from fellow bargain hunters.

However, some made the joke about the “best dad” items being put in the clearance section.

One commented: “Says it all really.”

Another added: “They never have appropriate gifts for the deadbeat dads!

“Always just amazing dad and superheroes.”

Father’s Day is on Sunday, June 15 and there are a number of free or small cost activities to guarantee your dad has the best time.

There are many places across the country that are giving dads free entry for one day only.

Dads go free all weekend at the Whitehouse Farm Centre, 30 minutes north of Newcastle. An adults entry costs £15.95 online or £16.95 on the day as a walk-in.

“Superhero dads” will also get free entry to Woodlands Leisure Park in Devon if the ticket is bought online in advance and with a child’s ticket. Tickets for an adult range from £20.93-£26.78 according to the website.

Other parks that offer similar deals include Twinlakes Park and Wheelgate Theme Park, Powderham Castle and Dartmoor Zoo.

The Eden Project in Cornwall is not only letting dad and grandads in for zero on Sunday, but they get a free pint if they dine in. A standard ticket is £38 online or £42 on the day.

If your dad prefers to open a gift on his big day, then there are some ways to get cheap presents for him.

Vodafone customers can get free socks from Sockshop and only pay £2.95 for postage. The offer is available until June 12 or until 30,000 pairs have been snapped up.

Co-op is giving away Walk a Mile with Dad t-shirts from July 11. There are 5,000 available and can be picked up on Co-op’s website.

There are also a number of restaurants doing special Father’s Day deals.

An ex employee on Poundland's prices

Holly Laing, 22, from Northampton, has revealed she used to work in Poundland and often heard customers say the same annoying thing.

Holly claimed she worked for Poundland in 2015 for three months as a Christmas temp.

She said that customers would get annoyed when products cost more than £1 individually.

In a comical video, Holly acted out a scenario that often occurred on her shift at the bargain store, where customers were always baffled and irritated that items could cost over £1.

Holly uploaded her video with the caption “I heard this a lot” as she said: “POV: Not everything’s £1 in Poundland”.

Holly explained that customers would often say to her: “But this is the pound shop, is it not?”

“That’s very misleading, I’ll only pay for that if it’s a pound.”

“Disgusting, what a rip off.”

The Blues are joined in Group D by Tunisian side Tunis EC and Brazil’s Flamengo

Felipe Luis, a former Premier League title winner with Chelsea, is Flamengo’s head coach.

The former full-back spent a year on the books at Stamford Bridge between 2014-15.

He made the most of his one season in West London, winning the Prem and the Carabao Cup.

Luis also played for Atletico Madrid, Deportivo and Figuerense in his two-decade career.

He ended his playing days at Flamengo, appearing over 100 times for the Rio-based club.

Luis took over the club’s youth team in January 2024 and was handed interim charge of the first XI last September.

Luis has impressed since taking over the reins, earning a new contract until the end of 2025.

He has won 31 of his 46 games in charge, with Flamengo currently leading the way in Brazil’s Serie A.

And he will hope to get one over his former club when Flamengo face Chelsea on June 20 in Philadelphia.

The tournament is likely to see fringe players given a chance to shine on the big stage.

But Chelsea keeper Djordje Petrovic has already opted out as he prepares a summer move away from the Bridge.

Petrovic, 25, enjoyed a successful loan stint at Strasbourg this past season and recently returned to the Blues’ squad.

Following his impressive performances in Ligue 1, the stopper wants to be a guaranteed starter.

That is something the West Londoners cannot currently offer him.

According to The Telegraph, the Serbia international asked to be omitted from Maresca’s squad for the Club World Cup.

Strasbourg and West Ham have been linked with a swoop for the Serbian.

It has been discovered that some of the lithium-ion batteries used in their A1112 Anker 321 Power Banks (PowerCore 5K, Black) may pose a fire safety risk due to a manufacturing defect.

The lithium-ion battery in the affected power banks can overheat, potentially causing melting of plastic components, smoke and fire hazards.

The company have said: “Although only a small number of batteries may be affected by this issue.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we are reaching out to all customers who purchased the product between March 1, 2023 and June 6, 2024 to begin a Recall program.”

Your product recall rights

Chief consumer reporter James Flanders reveals all you need to know.

Product recalls are an important means of protecting consumers from dangerous goods.

As a general rule, if a recall involves a branded product, the manufacturer would usually have lead responsibility for the recall action.

But it’s often left up to supermarkets to notify customers when products could put them at risk.

If you are concerned about the safety of a product you own, always check the manufacturer’s website to see if a safety notice has been issued.

When it comes to appliances, rather than just food items, the onus is usually on you – the customer – to register the appliance with the manufacturer as if you don’t there is no way of contacting you to tell you about a fault.

If you become aware that an item you own has been recalled or has any safety noticed issued against it, make sure you follow the instructions given to you by the manufacturer.

They should usually provide you with more information and a contact number on its safety notice.

In some cases, the manufacturer might ask you to return the item for a full refund or arrange for the faulty product to be collected.

You should not be charged for any recall work – such as a repair, replacement or collection of the recalled item

The company also offers telephone support.

Meanwhile, A home decoration product sold by Wayfair which is described as being “warm and soothing” has been urgently recalled due to a “high risk of electric shock”.

And LIDL has issued an urgent recall over fears a popular breakfast item contains pieces of metal.

Plus, an urgent warning was issued yesterday to UK shops selling a popular sweet product.

The Food Standards Agency warned businesses to stop sales of the sweets immediately.

How Florian Wirtz is Jurgen Klopp’s parting gift as Liverpool embarrass Bayern Munich with FIVE-YEAR charm offensive

FLORIAN WIRTZ probably always had it in his head that one day he might become a Liverpool player.

The man who planted that seed was Michael Edwards over five years ago.

ALAMY
Liverpool have been in constant contact with Wirtz’s father, Hans-Joachim, and mum, Karin Gross[/caption]

The connection established then, not only with Wirtz when he was still a youth player at FC Cologne but with his family, is a major reason why the mighty Bayern Munich have been left humiliated.

And why Manchester City were never really part of the equation nor even Real Madrid, despite the lure for Wirtz of again working under Xabi Alonso.

The ex-Liverpool midfielder was the manager at Bayer Leverkusen who realised he had a genius on his hands and helped him become a “creative force of nature”, as described on the Bundesliga website itself.

It most certainly did not go unnoticed at Bayern. And what Bayern want, they almost always get when it comes to collecting players from their rivals.

Fingers are snapped, fees agreed, contracts are signed and more Bundesliga talent dutifully marches into the Allianz Arena.

That’s the Bayern way. “Es ist erledigt,” they would say. Yes, ‘done and dusted’ is a phrase in Germany too, you know.

So when they sent their top brass along with manager Vincent Kompany for a cosy chat and a wage offer understood to be substantially more than Liverpool were talking – Wirtz, his agent dad Hans-Joachim and mum Karin where simply expected to ask on which dotted line to sign.

Not only that, Bayern sporting director Simon Rolfes and managing director Fernado Carro had an ace up their sleeve.

Florian wouldn’t be the only Wirtz to be joining. Just to make him feel right at home older sister Juliane would be there, too.

She’s rated as a decent midfielder for Werder Bremen but, unlike her little brother who has 29 caps, has never played for the senior German women’s team.

Bayern were willing to sign Wirtz’s sister Juliane as part of a deal if Wirtz chose them

No matter. Bayern would make it happen.

Then the whole Wirtz family – the footballing pair have eight siblings – would be able to settle down nicely in Bavarian splendour and forget about those upstart Englanders.

Except that neither are now signing. And Florian, a year younger than Juliane, is preparing for life in the Premier League as part of this summer’s spectacular re-booting of the new champions being put together by Edwards and sporting director Richard Hughes.

Yet the coup of signing Wirtz, with the Reds agreeing a stunning Premier League record £116m deal on Friday, is anything but a smash and grab raid on Bayern, no matter how arrogant and complacent they may have been in going for him.

Back in 2020, Edwards travelled to meet Hans-Joachim, Frau Karin and the young Wirtz, who started out with his father’s junior team SV Grun-Weiss Brauweiler.

I think my parents would get mad if I was too fixated on money. After I moved to Leverkusen at the age of 16, my parents managed my salary and transferred me 150 euros a month.

Florian Wirtz

Edwards is understood to have been first alerted to Wirtz’s potential by Jurgen Klopp, and bonds were created.

Even before Wirtz began making a name for himself after joining Leverkusen, Edwards was still there, a growing presence in the background and welcomed by the family.

Florian became the youngest–ever to feature for Leverkusen in the Bundesliga in May 2020, aged 17 years and 15 days.

Nineteen days after playing against Werder Bremen he became the German top flight’s youngest scorer – ironically, now, against Bayern.

He continued to make a growing impression, as did Edwards on him and the rest of the Wirtz clan, always staying touch.

Edwards left Liverpool in 2022, only to return in a far more powerful role in March of last year, just in time to decide that Arne Slot – and not the more vaunted Ruben Amorim – should be the man to replace Klopp.

SAITAMA, JAPAN - FEBRUARY 15: Jurgen Klopp, Head of Global Soccer for Red Bull, looks on during the J.LEAGUE MEIJI YASUDA J2 1st Sec. match between Omiya Ardija and Montedio Yamagata at NACK5 Stadium Omiya on February 15, 2025 in Saitama, Japan. (Photo by Koji Watanabe/Getty Images)

Director Michael Edwards spearheaded Liverpool’s transition from the Klopp to Arne Slot era

But Edwards was always a friend to the Wirtz family and so while money is most definitely talking in terms of that giant transfer fee, it was Edwards’ words and loyalty that counted when he made his move months ago.

Not that the brilliant young attacker, with more completed dribbles last season (83) than anyone in the Bundesliga, and nine more than the man who he would have been a Bayern rival to in Jamal Musiala, sees cash as a motivating factor.

Indeed, Wirtz revealed: “Of course, you should make sure that you get a good contract but the sporting perspective is much more important for me than the money.

“I think my parents would get mad if I was too fixated on money.

“After I moved to Leverkusen at the age of 16, my parents managed my salary and transferred me 150 euros a month.

“That shaped me. It was important to my parents that I didn’t do anything nonsensical with my salary.”

His salary will be less nonsensical than the one he was offered by Bayern even if it is likely to be in the region of £300,000 a week.

Florian Wirtz's 2024-25 Bundesliga statistics for Bayer Leverkusen.

But that relationship with Edwards, and a productive meeting with Slot, convinced him it would be common sense to move to Merseyside and join his Leverkusen team-mate Jeremie Frimpong, the Reds’ first signing of the summer.

Edwards’ sense of a great talent is unmatched, having also brought to Liverpool Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, Virgil van Dijk and Fabinho among many.

He didn’t sign the great Liverpool playmaker in Philippe Coutinho but he did negotiate the whopping £135m that Barcelona paid for him in 2018.

Wirtz may one day go down as the best of them all even if his talent makes signing him a no-brainer with that huge price reflecting his prodigy abilities.

But it took talent to spot him in the first place. Bayern, in their own backyard, didn’t.

They now have bratwurst all over their faces. Five years down the line Edwards has his man.

The ‘healthy’ kitchen staple you use every day ‘that’s making you FAT’, scientists warn

FROM salad dressings to bread dips and roasted veg, olive oil has long been celebrated as a kitchen staple with powerful health benefits.

A cornerstone of the Mediterranean diet, olive oil was hailed as an elixir of youth and health in ancient Greece.

The golden liquid may raise cholesterol and increase the risk of heart disease[/caption]

And swathes of new research suggest it lives up to the hype, slashing the risk of disease and early death.

But scientists now believe oleic acid, a common fat found in olive oil, helps fat cells grow and multiply, potentially driving weight gain faster than other oils.

US researchers behind the study urged home cooks to “moderate” their olive oil intake, “especially high-risk individuals.”

“If someone is at risk for heart disease, high levels of oleic acid may not be a good idea,” they wrote.

This comes amid growing concern from experts who warn that guzzling too much of the golden liquid may raise cholesterol and increase the risk of heart disease.

In the new study, published in Cell Reports, scientists fed mice diets enriched with specific fats found in olive oil, coconut oil, lard, peanut oil, milk, and soybeans.

They found oleic acid activated a protein called AKT2 while suppressing another, LXR, triggering the formation of new fat cells.

“You can think of the fat cells as an army,” said study co-author Dr Michael Rudolph, assistant professor of biochemistry and physiology at the University of Oklahoma.

“When you give oleic acid, it initially increases the number of ‘fat cell soldiers’ in the army, which creates a larger capacity to store excess nutrients,” he added.

“This means that over time, obesity can occur, which can then lead to cardiovascular disease or diabetes if not controlled,” he said.

The researchers admit most people don’t eat olive oil in isolation, they’re mixed into salads and burgers.

But diets high in oleic acid, especially from ultra-processed foods, could be bad news for the heart.

“I think the take-home message is moderation and to consume fats from a variety of different sources,” he said.

“Relatively balanced levels of oleic acid seem to be beneficial, but higher and prolonged levels may be detrimental.

“If someone is at risk for heart disease, high levels of oleic acid may not be a good idea.”

For years, olive oil has been the go-to fat for dietitians and chefs alike.

Just last year another, US study emerged suggesting more than half a tablespoon of olive oil a day can cut Alzheimer’s risk by 28 per cent.

Meanwhile, an NHS trial found that oleic acid could help treat incurable brain tumours.

Celebs and influencers also can’t get enough of it.

Dua Lipa drizzles it on ice cream, and Kourtney Kardashian swears by it as a hair treatment.

Top chef Jamie Oliver is known for generously pouring olive oil over his dishes.

And biohacker Bryan Johnson drinks spoonfuls of olive oil each morning and sells his own brand as part of a pricey anti-ageing plan.

‘Olive oil isn’t something to demonise’

Despite the new findings, Robert Hobson, nutritionist at Healthspan and author of Unprocess Your Family Life, said olive oil is still the “best” choice for everyday cooking, because of its “health benefits”.

“It helps lower cholesterol, because it increases good cholesterol, but lower bad cholesterol,” he told Sun Health.

Cholesterol is a substance found in fats that’s needed to build healthy cells, but can increase the risk of heart disease if levels are too high.

“You’ve also got things like pleocanthal, which is that peppery taste in olive oil, and that helps to reduce inflammation as well. “

But people should use it “sparingly” because it is a fat, he said.

“You only need a teaspoon in a non-stick pan to cook food,” he explained.

“And I think people do chuck it in very liberally.

“While it’s good for you, obviously, you can have loads of it, then it’s going to encourage weight gain.”

He added: “People in the Mediterranean have been using it for hundreds and hundreds of years and we recommend that diet as one of the healthiest diets.

“I just think it’s not a food that we should be demonising.”

How to follow the Mediterranean diet

The Mediterranean diet is rich in plants – think nuts, seeds, fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes.

The main fat is olive oil (usually extra virgin), and the diet usually includes moderate intake of fish, poultry, dairy, eggs and alcohol.

Other meat, sweets, beer, processed foods and refined grains are kept to a minimum.

Features of a Mediterranean lifestyle that may also benefit a person’s health include sharing meals with others, consuming red wine and flavouring foods with herbs and spices rather than salt.

A typical day following a Mediterranean diet may look like this:

BREAKFAST

Yoghurt with granola, banana, figs, almonds, sunflower seeds and peanut butter

LUNCH

Chicken salad with chickpeas, mozzarella, tomato, cucumber, kale, spinach, onion and a slice of wholemeal bread and extra virgin olive oil

DINNER

Grilled sea bass with brown rice, rocket and a glass of red wine

SNACKS

Apple and almond butter, hummus and crackers and boiled egg

Jake Paul ranks cruiserweight world champions and reveals he is in talks with TWO for shock title fight

JAKE PAUL says he is in talks to fight TWO of the cruiserweight world champions – having ranked the title holders.

The YouTuber-turned-boxer – who only debuted as a professional in 2020 – has set his sights on challenging for 200lb gold after just 12 fights.

Current WBA and WBO unified champ Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez returns on Paul’s June 28 undercard and WBC boss Badou Jack is also on his radar.

Australia’s pound-for-pound star and IBF holder Jai Opetaia is considered the best of the bunch – and Paul is in agreement.

He said: “Zurdo and Jai are probably tied for No1 and I would say Badou is No2.

“But all formidable opponents and we’re in conversations with Zurdo and also Badou as as potential fights for next year.”

Ramirez, 33, faces Cuban Yuniel Dorticos, 39, the night Paul returns against former middleweight world champ Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

And promoter Oscar de la Hoya has talked up a shock bout between Ramirez and Paul in the future.

Meanwhile Jack, 41, opened the door to defending his green and gold belt against the former Disney Channel actor, sparking behind-the-scenes conversations.

But Opetaia, 29, has refused to even entertain a fight with Paul as he looks to cement himself as a legitimate great with his eyes on the heavyweight division.

And Paul was probed on why the Aussie phenomenon was not joined by Ramirez and Jack on his list of potential title fights.

But he said: “It might line up but at the end of the day, there’s 100 people that want to fight me.

“I got Canelo, Gervonta (Davis), Anthony Joshua, Badou, Zurdo, Tommy Fury, KSI, the list keeps on going.

“So it’s just about what makes sense and we’ll see when the negotiations come but  I would for sure entertain a fight with him.”

Paul drops back down to the 14st 4lb cruiserweight limit of 200lbs after bulking up TWO STONE to fight at heavyweight against Mike Tyson.

But he admitted to getting “too fat” at 227lb (16st 2lb) for his points win over Tyson – who controversially returned at aged 58.

“It was just too much and my body wasn’t made for it,” he said.

“And even when I got into the ring I just felt too fat. So cruiserweight is definitely the perfect weight for me.”

Paul was close to agreeing a blockbuster May 3 bout in Las Vegas against Canelo Alvarez, 34, until the Mexican walked away from the deal.

So Paul turned his attention to an exhibition bout against WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis – despite their FIVE STONE difference.

But Davis is now set to rematch Lamont Roach in August after their controversial New York draw in March.

Paul, 28, finally called upon ex-middleweight world champ Chavez Jr, 39, back down at his natural and more comfortable weight.

He said ahead of the June 28 DAZN PPV: “I wanted the hardest and the biggest fights, which was first Canelo then Gervonta fell through.

“And then at any given point in time we’re negotiating or talking with five to six fighters to see who’s down and ready to fight and making a date happen.

“And after Canelo and Gervonta, we were talking to multiple people and Chavez was the one to step up, that made sense for me to stay active and get a fight in June.

“So really it’s just the long line and I just need more time but I’m gonna get to all of these names when the stars aligned.”
