Unremorseful’ dad who abused son so severely docs had to amputate both his legs could be FREED from jail early

A VILE dad who left his son with such horrific injuries that his legs had to be amputated should not be allowed out of jail early, the Shadow Justice Secretary has blasted.

Anthony Smith, 54, and his partner Jody Simpson, 33, were both jailed after little Tony Hudgell, now 10, was abused so badly as a baby that he ended up with multiple catastrophic injuries to his legs, hips and face.

Smith was jailed for 10 years in 2018 but could get out of prison early if the Parole Board deem he is no longer a risk to the public.

Shadow Justice Secretary Robert Jenrick has written to Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood to call for her to step in and urge the Parole Board to keep him locked up.

The Sun revealed last week that Simpson is now due to be released from prison imminently after it was ruled that she was no longer a risk to the public.

Tony has been recognised with national awards after he raised more than £1.8 million for the hospital which saved his life.

At the age of five, he challenged himself to walk every day in June to raise money for Evelina London Children’s Charity, inspired by Captain Tom.

In a joint letter signed by Jenrick, Shadow Solicitor General Helen Grant, and Shadow Minister for Justice Dr Kieran Mullan, they wrote: “Last week the Parole Board authorised the release of Jody Simpson, whose extreme violent attack caused her infant son to lose both of his legs.

“The Board will now consider Anthony Smith, the boy’s father and co-offender in this despicable crime, at a hearing fixed for 19th June.

“Tony Hudgell was forty-one days old when Smith and Simpson fractured his limbs, withheld medical care for ten days and caused injuries so grave that doctors were forced to amputate.

“At its most recent review in 2023 the Board found Smith impulsive, chaotic and unremorseful.

“No material now before the public points to any improvement.

“Tony will live with the consequences for life.

“If the man who inflicted those appalling injuries is released back into society after serving little more than two-thirds of his sentence, confidence in the justice system will erode.

“Parliament designed the sentencing and release regime to protect the public, not to serve an offender’s timetable.

“We therefore urge you, as the statutory party to these proceedings, to scrutinise the dossier personally and to place clear, evidence-based representations before the Board before 19 June.

“The safety of vulnerable children – and public trust in our justice system – depend on it.”

Tony’s birth mother Simpson had been due for automatic release before the Justice Secretary stepped in and forced her to face a parole hearing.

But despite her intervention, Simpson is set to walk free from prison and will spend just two years on license.

Paula Hudgell, who adopted Tony as a baby, previously told The Sun: “We knew this was coming after being at the parole hearing and in light of what the Government is doing to ease prison crowding, so it was expected.

If the man who inflicted those appalling injuries is released back into society after serving little more than two-thirds of his sentence, confidence in the justice system will erode.

Robert JenrickShadow Justice Secretary

“The frustration for us is that she will be on license for two years and then will be able to live a happy life, whereas Tony will have life-long problems because of her and Anthony Smith’s actions.

“We made the change with Tony’s law and now future cases are supposed to get lengthier sentences.

“But with the Government’s new policy to release prisoners including child abusers and paedophiles early it sort of makes a mockery of that new sentencing power.

“We are grateful that Shabana Mahmood stepped in and blocked her from being released without a parole hearing, that meant she was in prison longer than she would have been otherwise, but it just feels wrong that she should be free while Tony has to live with the consequences of her actions for life.

“All the politicians we speak to on both sides know about Tony’s case, which I think has helped.

“They all know the story and see that despite his limitations Tony is still just a normal 10-year-old boy who just wants to do all the things normal 10-year-old boys do.

“I think that has helped our campaign, and now we just want to use that to make sure child abusers are properly punished.”

New £5billion train line to connect two of the UK’s most beautiful cities

A NEW £5billion train line is set to connect two of the UK’s most beautiful cities.

The government have confirmed a £2.5 billion cash injection into continuing to deliver the plan.

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has confirmed a further £2.5 billion in funding for East West Rail

Chancellor Rachel Reeves has confirmed a further £2.5 billion in funding for East West Rail (EWR), the major infrastructure project to establish a railway link between Oxford and Cambridge.

She announced the investment in her first spending review statement to Parliament after the long-delayed scheme.

Speaking in the House of Commons Reeves said: “I have heard representations from my honourable friends from Milton Keynes North, Milton Keynes Central and Buckingham and Bletchley.

“And I can tell the House today to connect Oxford and Cambridge and to back Milton Keynes’ leading tech sector I am providing a further £2.5 billion for the continued delivery of East West Rail.”

The funding is part of a broad vision to develop the Oxford-Cambridge Growth Corridor.

A government policy paper released alongside the Chancellor’s speech described a “renewed focus” on driving growth in the area.

It also confirmed that EWR remains central to that ambition, supporting not only economic development but also enabling large-scale housing growth reports East Anglia ByLines.

Reeves reiterated the government’s commitment to creating 1.5 million new homes and emphasised that new transport links like EWR would help unlock sites for housing and employment along the route.

The railway is also expected to ease pressure on roads, connect communities more effectively and stimulate local economies by making areas more attractive for investment and business start-ups.

Councillor Judy Roberts, cabinet member for Place, Environment and Climate Action on Oxfordshire County Council, said: “We welcome the continued commitment from the government to progress East West Rail through to Cambridge,” reported This is Oxfordshire.

She added: “Which builds on previous budget commitments and delivery of the route between Oxford and Milton Keynes, expected to open soon following current train testing.

“East West Rail effectively provides a ‘backbone’ for developing a wider regional integrated sustainable transport network.

“And it will be important that Oxfordshire works with those on the scheme to provide high-quality first mile/last mile connectivity from key stations along the route.

“It will also be important to maximise the benefits of development for East West Rail through delivering economic, social and environmental benefits, as well as onward rail connections, for example to Swindon and Bristol.

What is the East West Rail

First conceived more than 20 years ago, the EWR project aims to establish a direct rail link between Oxford and Cambridge.

The full scheme is expected to cost at least £5 billion and includes both upgrades to existing infrastructure and construction of new lines.

The project is divided into four key segments:

  • Upgrading the rail between Oxford and Bicester (completed in 2016).
  • Restoring a disused line between Bicester and Bletchley (opening later this year).
  • Refurbishing the existing route from Bletchley to Bedford (to be completed by 2030).
  • Building a brand new stretch of railway from Bedford to Cambridge (still in planning stage).
  • The line, once completed, will make it possible to travel from Oxford or Cambridge to most of the north of England without having to go through London.

“This includes delivery of a fully decarbonised passenger and freight railway at the next stage of development, with supporting investment in electrification infrastructure and high-quality new trains, including for use between Oxford and Milton Keynes.”

Calum Miller, MP for Bicester and Woodstock, also supported the plans and said: “I welcome the Government’s confirmation in the Spending Review of the £2.5 billion for the next phase of the East West Rail project.

“It’s crucial that East West Rail deliver the funding to keep London Road open and I will continue pressing the company and Rail Ministers to commit to an underpass for all modes of light transport.”

Other announcements made in the spending review included a further £3.5 billion towards improving the TransPennine rail route that links York, Leeds and Manchester.

This Morning star’s heartbreaking final video revealed just hours before tragic death on Air India crash

A HEARTBREAKING final video posted by a This Morning star has been revealed just hours before their tragic death on the Air India crash that claimed 241 lives.

Fiongal Greenlaw-Meek, 39, appeared twice on the ITV daytime show earlier this year, discussing the healthy lifestyle company he founded with his husband Jamie Meek, 45.

Fiongal appeared twice on the ITV daytime show earlier this year[/caption]

The couple were among the passengers who passed away when the flight crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad on June 12, bound for Gatwick.

In the chilling final clip filmed at Ahmedabad airport, Fiongal and Jamie, dressed in floral shirts and visibly happy, reflect on their trip.

Fiongal says: “We are at the airport just boarding. Goodbye India. Ten-hour flight back to England. What was your biggest takeaway Jamie?”

Jamie responds: “I don’t know,” prompting Fiongal’s laughter and a teasing, “Thanks for your contribution.”

Fiongal jokes that his main lesson was “don’t lose your patience with your partner,” to which Jamie smiles and replies, “You snapped at me at the airport for having chai.”

Passengers mill in the background as Fiongal adds, “I’m going back to Britain happily, happily calm.”

This Morning paid tribute to Fiongal during Friday’s broadcast.

Dermot O’Leary said: “We are starting today with the tragic flight disaster dominating the news this morning. Sadly, one of those believed to have lost his life is Fiongal Greenlaw-Meek.”

Co-presenter Alison Hammond added: “Of the 242 people on board, 241 lost their lives, including 52 from the UK, making it the worst aviation disaster involving British nationals since the 9/11 attacks.”

Martin Frizell, former editor of This Morning, posted a touching tribute on Instagram, sharing a photo of Fiongal smiling alongside Ben Shephard and Cat Deeley.

He wrote: “So, so sad to hear that Fiongal Greenlaw Meek and his partner are reported to be among the passengers and crew killed today on board the Air India flight bound for Gatwick.

“I remember his visit to the studio in January, he was passionate about auras and although I’m a sceptical sort his vibrancy and sheer enthusiasm won folk over.

“And I know for a fact that he hoped to use his appearance on This Morning to build his Wellness brand, he had a great future ahead of him.

“Thoughts are with his family and friends and those of his partner Jamie.”

Jamie’s brother Nick Meek told MailOnline: “We were expecting him home tonight. He should have landed at 6.30pm and then driven up for about 11pm to get his dog who is staying with our Mum.

“She is not in a good way. It is all very raw for her at the moment. It’s a lot to take in and we only heard this news a couple of hours ago.”

Jamie and Fiongal, who lived in London and ran the wellness brand the Wellness Foundry, had been in India for about 10 days on a wellness retreat.

Nick said: “They both worked in holistics and had their own business.”

Although Jamie had been to India before, this was their first trip as a couple since marrying in 2022.

They lived together in Ramsgate, Kent.

Earlier social media posts from the couple showed their experiences in Ahmedabad, including a seven-hour car journey to a stunning hotel.

In one clip, Fiongal lies on a large bed beside a giant swing, describing the hotel as “beautiful” and saying he felt “very, very happy.”

Their time in India was captured in a series of posts showing henna tattoos, shopping for fabrics and gifts, and riding in a tuk-tuk through busy streets.

On their final night, Fiongal reflected: “So, it’s our last night in India and we’ve had a magical experience. Some mind-blowing things have happened.

We are going to put all this together and create a vlog. It’s my first ever vlog about the whole trip and we want to share it.”

Jamie added: “We have been on quite a journey and then spending our last night here in this beautiful hotel, it’s really been a great way to round off the trip.”

The Wellness Foundry, founded by Fiongal in 2018 after a spiritual awakening triggered by illness, specialises in tarot and psychic readings, reiki, and other alternative therapies.

The company’s website says Fiongal sought healing “beyond conventional methods” and explored practices that “resonated deeply within his soul.”

While the exact cause of the horrific Air India crash is not yet known, speculation continues to swirl online.

The Boeing 787 Dreamliner with 242 passengers on board – including 53 Brits and 11 children – smashed into a doctors’ hostel in the west of India on Thursday.

The plane was heading to London Gatwick when it crashed just moments after take-off.

One of Flight AI171’s two “black boxes” has reportedly been recovered – which should provide crucial evidence on the fateful minutes between the plane leaving the airport terminal to it’s impact.

The black box will provide technical information on details like time, speed, altitude and heading.

And the cockpit voice recorder may also offer vital clues such as any conversation between the two pilots, any engine noises or bangs, stall warnings or sounds of other equipment.

The crash killed at least 265 people – including those on board and locals on the ground.

As crash investigators begin to pour over that data, The Sun looks at six main theories as potential causes for India’s worst ever aviation disaster.

Jon Jones breaks silence after Dana White claims he AGREED to Tom Aspinall fight to deliver message to ‘haters’

An image collage containing 3 images, Image 1 shows Jon Jones preparing for a UFC heavyweight championship fight, Image 2 shows Dana White at a UFC press conference, Image 3 shows Tom Aspinall of England preparing for a UFC heavyweight championship fight

JON JONES has issued a message to his “haters” after Dana White’s claim that he AGREED to fight Tom Aspinall.

The UFC have been hard at work trying to finalise the mammoth heavyweight title unification fight, which has been on the cards since last November, between the pair.

White and Co. agreed to Jones’ demands to be paid “f**k you money” for the fight but the former pound-for-pound king is now seriously leaning towards vacating his belt and retiring.

Jones’ recent hints came as a surprise to White, who said last weekend: “Jon Jones agreed to do the fight.

Jon Jones was offered the deal and accepted the deal. Jon agreed to fight Tom, yes.”

White’s revelation has led to a barrage of MMA fans accusing Jones of trolling everyone with his social media activity.

And he issued a message to his detractors after being branded the “best troll the sport has ever seen”.

He said: “I’ve never claimed to be the best but somehow, I keep ending up with my hand raised.

“Jones haters [are] frustrated these days.”

UFC supremo White has been bullish about booking the biggest heavyweight fight in the promotion’s near 32-year history.

But like fight fans worldwide, the veteran promoter’s confidence in the fight coming to fruition is seemingly starting to fade.

During the UFC 316 post-fight press conference, he admitted: “Listen, you can’t make people fight.

“If Jon doesn’t want to fight, you can’t make him fight.

“We can try to make him fight, we can throw things at him that inspire him to want to fight.

“But we’ll figure it out.”

Jones hasn’t fought since making his sole defence of the heavyweight title against Stipe Miocic at UFC 309 last November.

Aspinall, meanwhile, has been on the sidelines waiting for his crack at the former 205lbs king since his 60-second demolition job of Curtis Blaydes at UFC 304 last July.

Fury as bungling Cabinet Minister claims most small boat migrants are women and children – despite majority being men

A BUNGLING Cabinet Minister has sparked fury for claiming most small boat migrants are women and children.

Darren Jones was today accused of being “completely out of touch with reality” given the overwhelming majority of Channel crossers are adult men.

Darren Jones claimed most of the arrivals are women and children

Labour’s Chief Secretary to the Treasury made the bizarre assertion on Question Time, leaving the audience groaning in disbelief.

The debate on illegal migration saw him claim “the majority of the people in these boats are children, babies and women”.

Home Office figures show that 73 per cent of all Channel arrivals since 2018 have been adult males.

Incredibly, Downing Street yesterday repeatedly refused to correct Mr Jones’ comments.

Asked if the government was “gaslighting Britain”, Sir Keir Starmer’s spokesman said: “Our focus is on tackling the gangs.”

Tory Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp blasted: “Darren Jones is completely out of touch with reality.

“Since 2018, 73 per cent of small boat arrivals have been single adult men. Yet Labour MPs like Jones still push the fairytale that these boats are full of women and babies.

“It’s a dangerous distortion of the truth. No wonder this is shaping up to be the worst year on record for small boat crossings.

“If this is what passes for reality inside the Labour Government, Britain is in serious trouble.”

Nigel Farage branded Mr Jones “another clueless Labour minister”

More than 15,000 small boat migrants have crossed the Channel already this year – a record number.

And more than 150,000 have come since 2018 when the crisis erupted.

It comes after Rachel Reeves yesterday admitted she has no clue where Channel migrants will go instead of hotels.

The Chancellor has vowed to scrap their “costly” use within four years as part of her spending review — but could not say what would replace them.

Pressed on where arrivals would be housed, she passed the buck to Home Secretary Yvette Cooper.

Ms Reeves told Times Radio: “Well, I’m not going to be providing accommodation.

“That’s for the Home Office to do. “But the wasteful spending on the most expensive form of accommodation is a terrible use of taxpayers’ money.”

When is it too hot to work? Office rights explained for workers

TEMPERATURES continue to rise, and many will be feeling hot under their work collars.

The MET Office has forecast that temperatures could hit up to 28C across some parts of the UK.

A desk fan in the foreground with a person drinking water in the background.
Woman cools down using a fan and water bottle in a hot office

Yet while these balmy conditions may feel like we’re on holiday, for those who have to face days in the office and can’t be with a fan at home, these are your rights when it gets too hot to work.

When is it too hot to work?

Unfortunately, it’s not simple.

Firstly, there’s no minimum or maximum temperature for offices or other places of work defined by law.

But, the Trades Union Congress (TUC) has said: “An employer must provide a working environment which is, as far as is reasonably practical, safe and without risks to health.”

The issue is that this definition of what is “reasonable” and “safe” is debatable.

National Accident Helpline legal operations director John Kushnick said: “Temperatures in the workplace are covered by the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992, which place a legal obligation on employers to provide a ‘reasonable’ temperature in the workplace.

“They suggest that the minimum temperature in a workplace should be at least 16ºC, or if the work involves rigorous physical exertion, it can be 13ºC.

“Unfortunately, there are no laws which specifically state that workers can stop working if the temperature gets too hot or cold.”

But if a workplace does feel too hot, there are some typical signs to look out for if it feels like someone is suffering from heat stress:

  • An inability to concentrate
  • Muscle cramps
  • Heat rash
  • Severe thirst – a late symptom of heat stress
  • Fainting
  • Heat exhaustion – fatigue, giddiness, nausea, headache, moist skin
  • Heat stroke – hot dry skin, confusion, convulsions and eventual loss of consciousness. This is the most severe disorder and can result in death if not detected at an early stage

Bosses should undertake a risk assessment if enough staff complain about working conditions.

The independent health and safety regulator also said:  “If a significant number of employees are complaining about thermal discomfort, your employer should carry out a risk assessment, and act on the results of that assessment.”

The HSE has previously suggested bosses should ensure their workers have access to water and monitor their wellbeing in hot weather.

What’s more, if a staff member is deemed vulnerable, such as those going through menopause or who are pregnant, this should be taken into account.

In this instance, vulnerable employees may need to work from home. But this is not possible for everyone, and so businesses may need to adapt.

Fans, relaxed dress codes, or turning up the air conditioning are all measures that can make the office environment more comfortable.

What are the temperature recommendations?

The Chartered Institute of Building Services Engineers has helpfully recommended the following temperatures for different areas of work.

  • Heavy work in factories: 13°C
  • Light work in factories: 16°C
  • Hospital wards and shops: 18°C
  • Offices and dining rooms: 20°C

If you have to take public transport, what are your rights?

Much like in the office, these are up for debate as each transport company can set its own policies, and so during a heatwave, there are no laws about temperatures.

Therefore, over the coming weeks, travellers are in for some pretty hot journeys.

And while Transport for London has said all Tubes will be air-conditioned by 2030, let’s not forget the extremely high temperatures Londoners face on the Tube, with commuters claiming they experienced conditions of 42C in 2018!

So until the time that commuting is not like walking into an oven, it is recommended that travellers take water bottles and, if possible, wear loose-fitting clothing which is cool and light.

Commuters who travel by car are also sharing tips to save money and stay cool when travelling. There are also easy ways to fight the heat at home with some “air con” hacks.

Cops unveil new £180k bullet-proof battle machine – 18 armoured 4x4s to tackle extreme riots unveiled by Met

ARMOURED cars have been spotted cruising London’s streets after cops splashed out on military 4x4s to tackle extreme rioting.

With matte-grey paint, flashing blue lights and the word “police” on the side written in block capitals, the hefty vehicles are hard to miss.

Several of the military-grade tanks intended to tackle rioting have been spotted weaving between lanes in London.

These are the “Sandcats” – the newest addition to the Met Police‘s fleet, estimated to cost around £180,000.

The mammoth 9,000kg 4x4s can transport up to 11 officers and stands at 7ft 7in tall.

The new armoured cars will be used for “high-risk armed policing operations” and 18 have been ordered in total.

The Met Police said the new trucks aren’t yet being used in operations.

The force is currently training drivers, which is why they have been seen driving around London.

A spokesperson said: “These are specialist armoured vehicles used for high-risk armed policing operations, by officers deployed at airports and as a contingency option for use in the most serious public disorder the like of which we thankfully rarely see.”

Sandcats are manufactured by Israeli company Plasan and have been used by the military in several countries.

According to the company website, the Sandcat Tigris is the preferred choice for both the IDF and Ministry of Defence.

They replace the older Jankel models, which were deployed during the 2011 riots but have very rarely been used.

The bullet-resistant Jankel Guardians that the force previously used cost about £100,000 each.

The seven-tonne personnel carrier could withstand AK-47 bullets and had a bomb-proof floor.

Over the past year or so, the UK has been rocked by disorder and rioting in the streets.

This week, masked yobs lobbed petrol bombs and fireworks at cops across four days of chaos across Northern Ireland.

Police described the riots as “racially-motivated hate attacks” with a senior officer slamming the scenes as “racist thuggery”.

Several houses even put up signs identifying their residents as British or Filipino in an apparent attempt to avoid being targeted.

Violence originally erupted on Monday, stemming from an initially peaceful gathering to support a girl and her family after an alleged sexual assault.

Girl ‘whose sex assault by teen boys’ sparked ‘racist’ riots wants violence to end as 4th night of carnage erupts

By Emily Jane Davies

A YOUNG girl whose sexual assault by teenage boys sparked riots across Northern Ireland has called for an end to the violence.

Northern Ireland Police Chief Jon Boutcher said the girl had been “further traumatised” by the riots – as the fourth night of chaos unfolded yesterday.

Police quickly clamped down on hundreds of rioters who were spotted throwing missiles and petrol bombs in Portadown – less than an hour from where the riots started – last night.

Shocking footage showed thugs lobbing live fireworks at rows of police riot vans.

The chaos began in Ballymena on Monday night, hours after two 14-year-old boys appeared in court charged with attempted rape of a girl.

The boys confirmed their names – which cannot be reported – and their ages through a Romanian interpreter at Coleraine Magistrates’ Court.

Cops decried the mass carnage which followed as “racist thuggery”.

Northern Ireland‘s Chief Constable told how the girl’s family had been left “mortified” by the horrific scenes.

Speaking yesterday, he said: “I reiterate the retraumatising of this poor girl, she’s been through enough through what happened to her on Saturday evening. She doesn’t want any of this.

“I know the family are mortified. I’ve spoken to them personally, they’ve asked me to make this plea.#

“This girl’s family and this girl want it to end. Our communities want it to end. We need it to end.

“Stop this violence. We will come after you. We will arrest you. We will prosecute you successfully.

“I want to specifically mention the 41 police officers who’ve been injured. Each of those officers have put themselves in harm’s way to protect our communities.

“It is not in any way a way for a civilised society to behave and it must stop now.”

Northern Ireland Police Chief Jon Boutcher said the girl had been “further traumatised” by the riots.

Last summer, Britain was a tinderbox as widespread unrest and disorder broke out following misinformation about the Southport child killer.

Bebe King, Elsie Dot Stancombe and Alice Da Silva Aguiar were murdered in a knife attack and social media posts falsely claimed they were killed by an illegal migrant.

The disgraceful rioters torched cars, police stations and mosques.

In 2020, Scotland Yard put out a notice saying it wanted to buy a new fleet of military-style trucks to tackle public disorder, firearms incidents and riots in the capital.

It wanted security, fire-fighting and defence equipment and armour plating.

Last year, it was reported that Police Scotland’s £282,000 battle machine meant to be driven by “action man officers” has never been used.

The gas-guzzling 4×4 beasts are used by military specialists in warzones and by police tackling drug cartels in South America.

Yet, Police Scotland’s bulletproof Sandcat has been locked in storage collecting dust for two years.

Insiders have previously claimed the reason it has remained idle is from a lack of officers able to drive it, with regular training needed to operate it.

The force has refused to comment on how many of its staff can use the 4×4 Sandcat.

Underneath the Sandcat’s hood lies a huge 6.7-litre V8 engine that only does around nine mpg, which is about as fuel-efficient as an F1 racing car.

Although the armoured car hasn’t seen any action, the force still believes it’s necessary to keep it.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said at the time: “The specialist vehicle can be used in a number of scenarios linked to a major incident and improves our options to keep people safe.

“While it has not yet been deployed to a major incident, it has been used for training purposes and it provides additional operational capabilities.”
