Paramount+ Makes Final Decision on ‘Landman’ Season 3 Amid Drop in Rotten Tomatoes Score

The second season of Landman got off to a rousing start, bringing in over nine million viewers in its first two days available for streaming.

The Billy Bob Thornton-led series had a 262% increase in viewership from the premiere of Season 1 to Season 2, but a drop in scores led to questions about the show’s future. Thornton previously announced his intentions for a four-to-five-year run on the show.

Well, yes, absolutely. As long as I’m able, I want to do it. Or, until the story runs out. When I did [Amazon’s] Goliath, where I played a lawyer, I signed up for four years. And after those four years, we were satisfied,” he said.

“Sometimes people can go a bridge too far. There are certain shows that have been on for 12, 14, 17 seasons. After a while, it’s like, ‘OK, we get it. But what are you going to come up with next?’ You either have to do something ridiculous or repeat stuff you’ve already been doing. So I think Landman, as an entity, will know when it’s over.”

It appears to show isn’t over quite yet. Earlier this week a plethora of reports revealed Landman is returning for a third season.

“The renewal news comes as the oil industry drama has aired just three episodes of its second season, with the fourth episode due to air on Dec. 7,” Variety reported.

The decision comes not long after showrunner Christian Wallace suggested they were “just skimming the surface” of what could play out.

“We got to know these characters in season one, and now we get to spend more time with them in season two. We get to raise the stakes,” Wallace said. “They are so fun to be around. This world is so rich — West Texas, oil and gas, Fort Worth, the upstairs downstairs of this whole thing. It’s such fertile soil for storytelling. Our cast has added so much depth to the characters. They know them so well now that they make it easy to tell an entertaining story.”

The fourth episode of the second season drops on Dec. 7.
