Part of the Louvre Museum’s jewelry collection was transferred to the Bank of France after the theft of eight pieces with an estimated value of 88 million euros, reported the EFE agency. The decision aims to protect the jewelry by applying enhanced security, according to French news channel BFMTV. THEIt is not yet known when the jewels will be able to return to the museum.
On Thursday, Paris Public Prosecutor Laure Beccuau said she hopes the four assailants are identified and detained as quickly as possible. THE A criminal group robbed the museum last Sunday and it took them just a few minutes to enter the Apolo Gallery in a goods elevator, quickly break two of the three display cases, installed at the end of 2019 to store the jewelry, and escape with the pieces.
Three days after the robbery, the president of the Louvre Museum, Laurence des Cars, declared in the French Senate that would like to see a “police station created inside the museum” and wanted toask the Ministry of the Interior to study this possibility. Des Cars stressed that “this theft hurts the institution in its deepest mission” and that, in the “short term”, it is planned to reinforce security in the vicinity of the Louvre, namely “remote control devices” to prevent “vehicles from parking” near the museum.
The director also explained to the senators that the video surveillance cameras inside the museum had worked at the time of the robbery, but that the video surveillance outside is a weak point.
