Parts of beloved Joburg Botanical Gardens to reportedly be sold off

The City of Johannesburg is drawing fire from residents over secretive plans to sell off major chunks of public parkland to private developers, including parts of the cherished Johannesburg Botanical Gardens, Zoo Lake, and several prominent recreational sites.

As reported by 2Oceansvibe, internal tender documents suggest that high-density housing and commercial properties could soon rise on land currently occupied by the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens in Emmarentia, Marks Park, and the Pirates Sports Club.

The city’s council is expected to discuss the proposal at an August meeting, but no formal announcement has been made yet.

City of Johannesburg selling off green spaces?

Additional sites reportedly on the chopping block include the Field and Study Recreational Centre, Melrose Bowling Club, Killarney Country Club, as well as Zoo Lake, all long-standing community hubs deeply rooted in Johannesburg’s public life.

The potential selloff reportedly came to light after sharp-eyed residents noticed the properties listed in a Johannesburg Property Company (JPC) tender document.

No public consultation preceded the discovery, sparking backlash from neighbourhood groups, environmental advocates, and sports organisations.

Spanning over 80 hectares, the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens is more than a scenic escape. It’s a sanctuary for biodiversity, a playground for families, and a much-needed green space in the city.

The gardens offer walking trails, picnic lawns, and themed plant sections, including a renowned rose garden.
