The Kansas City Chiefs are set to take on the Philadelphia Eagles in the biggest NFL matchup of Week 2. It’s the first meeting between the teams since the Eagles blew the Chiefs out in the Super Bowl back in February, one of the more one-sided championship games in recent memory.
The Eagles won a close game against the Dallas Cowboys, but Week 1 was a disaster for then Chiefs. In addition to losing the game to a divisional opponent in the Los Angeles Chargers, they lost one of their key offensive players in wide receiver Xavier Worthy.
The Chiefs will take ot the field looking for their first win of the new season, and Mahomes has a little more personal incentive to grab that inaugural win of 2025.
Mahomes Looking to Avoid Historic Slow Start
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Kansas City Chiefs have never lost three games in a row with Mahomes as their starting quarterback. Kansas City lost in the Super Bowl, and then lost to the Los Angeles Chargers in Brazil was week to open the season.
Mahomes has one of the best records of any quarterback in the league, and his ability to overcome pressure and talent on the other side of the field will be on full display. In the Super Bowl, the Eagles were able to constantly make Mahomes uncomfortable when he dropped back to pass.
Philadelphia has lost some players to free agency and retirement, but many of the key pieces on the Super Bowl roster remain. Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, DeVonta Smith and AJ Brown run the show on offense, all behind the league’s best offensive line.
Defensively, the Eagles have exciting and promising young players like Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell, as well as veterans like Zack Baun. Those players frustrated and bothered Mahomes all game long in the Super Bowl, with DeJean even returning an interception for a touchdown.
What Would Another Loss Mean for the Chiefs?
The Chiefs are looking to continue their dominant run atop the AFC and specifically, the AFC West. Kansas City has won the division in each of the last nine seasons. That run could come to an end if the team starts 0-2 after Sunday, as history and time won’t be in their favor.
Each week increases the urgency for a winless team, especially as other teams want to avoid losing to one of the worst teams in the league. The Chiefs likely won’t have that problem as they navigate the rest of the year, but every loss puts them further away from a playoff return.
Patrick Mahomes has proven that he’s one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time in his career so far. He may need to prove it again on Sunday to avoid losing three games in a row for the first time in his professional career.
We’ll see what happens when the Philadelphia Eagles take on the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday afternoon.
