Peanut Allergies Are Declining Thanks to a Simple Early Step, Research Finds

Peanut allergies are on a steady decline, thanks to a public health recommendation. For years, parents were advised to delay introducing peanuts until age three or older. But research eventually showed that early exposure could actually help prevent allergies. In 2017, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases updated its guidance, recommending that children under three be introduced to common allergens, including peanuts.

A recent study published in Pediatrics examined whether these guidelines affected rates of food allergies in young children. Researchers analyzed primary care health records from multiple states, focusing on children aged zero to three. They tracked diagnoses of peanut-specific and any immunoglobulin E-mediated food allergy, as well as atopic dermatitis, before and after the guideline changes.

Between 2012 and 2020, all food allergies dropped by 36 percent, with peanut allergies specifically declining 43 percent. Eggs are now the most common childhood allergen, overtaking peanuts.

“We’re talking about the prevention of a potentially deadly, life-changing diagnosis,” Edith Bracho-Sanchez, MD, told The New York Times. “This is real-world data of how a public health recommendation can change children’s health.”

According to the study, these guidelines are having the intended effect, providing strong evidence that early preventive measures can meaningfully reduce the risk of food allergies in young children. Following the recommendation, peanut-containing foods can be safely introduced to infants as early as four months of age. As always, parents should consult a medical professional on the best way to introduce children to nuts and other allergens safely.
