Peasants from Guanajuato, Michoacán, Hidalgo, Tlaxcala and Sinaloa maintained their protests and road blockades. Corn producers continue to demand a guaranteed price of 7,200 pesos per ton.
Despite the fact that on Wednesday it was announced that all blockades would be lifted in the Bajío region, in Guanajuato and Michoacán, farmers dissatisfied with the agreement reported by the federal government – of support of 950 pesos per ton of corn – resumed cutting.
In Guanajuato, traffic was intermittently closed on the Salamanca-Celaya highway, near the municipality of Juventino Rosas.
Farmers chose to open a lane for short periods to allow mobility; However, it has been insufficient to speed up the traffic flow, which is why for the fourth consecutive day long lines of stranded vehicles persist, especially cargo trucks.
The farmers stated that they are not clear about the federal government’s commitment, nor are they sure that it will be fulfilled.
“They were asked to respect the guaranteed price of 7,200 (pesos) per ton. They say that only those who harvest little will be paid that amount, and those who don’t will be given support of 950 pesos, and well, let it be written,” said one of the protesters.
In Michoacán, around 6:00 p.m. protesters resumed the blockade of the Western Highway at the Panindícuaro, Zinapécuaro and Ecuandureo booths.
In Hidalgo, farmers have maintained a blockade on the Arco Norte Highway since Tuesday, at kilometer 80. The producers point out that their protest is added to the demand of the Bajío farmers for a guaranteed price of 7,200 pesos per ton.
They pointed out that there was no agreement with the federal government, which they accused of lying at the dialogue tables.
The closure of the Arco Norte Highway generated a line of several kilometers, where the main victims are cargo transporters.
On Friday afternoon, a group of truck drivers, armed with sticks and stones, confronted the producers, who were forced to retreat, allowing circulation to partially reopen, but the farmers were still on site.
Government sees “other interests” among some protesters
President Claudia Sheinbaum explained that there are working groups with the Ministry of Agriculture to address the demands of the sector, although she indicated that groups with other interests participate in some blockades.
