The Pentagon – the United States Department of Defense – criticized the “Boots” series, launched on October 9th by Netflix. The Department’s press secretary, Kingsley Wilson, accuses the streaming platform of imposing its “ideological agenda”.
“Under President Trump and Secretary [Pete] Hegseth, the United States armed forces are restoring their warrior ethic once again”, says Wilson in statements to the American magazine Entertainment Weekly. “Our standards are generally elite, uniform, and gender neutral, because the weight of a backpack or a human being doesn’t care if you’re a man, a woman, gay, or straight.”
However, the secretary adds that employees “will not compromise their [seus] standards to satisfy an ideological agenda, unlike Netflix, whose leadership consistently produces and feeds woke garbage to its audiences and children.”
The series, centered on the theme LGBT+is based on the memoir “The Pink Marine”, which tells the true story of veteran Greg Cope White, author of the literary work and co-executive producer of the series. The Netflix adaptation follows teenager Cameron Cope, personified by Miles Heizer (known for his presence in series such as “Thirteen Reasons Why” or “Love, Simon”), who enlists in the army, influenced by his best friend, in the American 90s.
“When the series started filming [em 2023]I don’t think we intended to have this message that is so relevant to today’s military service”, points out Heizer, quoted by The Guardian. “But then when we started making it, all these things started happening. It’s really interesting that ‘Boots’ highlights what’s really happening now, even though the show is set in the year 1990. It’s disturbing.”

Later this month, Elon Musk carried out a Netflix “cancellation” campaign, calling on subscribers to boycott the platform and cancel their subscriptions. The protest was based on a children’s animation series that represented a transgender character. On the social network X, the businessman and former senior advisor to the White House published: “Cancel Netflix for the health of your children”.

In June, the North American Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, ordered the United States Navy to remove the name of LGBT+ activist Harvey Milk from one of the fleet’s ships, in order to “reestablish the warrior culture” of the army, cites the British newspaper.
