People are confused by the random family at the end of Squid Game 3, so here’s who Cheol is

Squid Game season three came to an explosive conclusion, but amidst the plots and storylines being tied up in neat little bows, Twitter and TikTok became flooded with questions about Kang Cheol and the random family that appeared with him.

In the final few scenes of Squid Game season three, before Cate Blanchett appears in a shocking cameo, Kang Cheol appears in the airport alongside the unnamed mother of Cho Sang-woo, a player in season one of Squid Game and Gi-hun’s best friend. There’s a touching moment between Cheol and his parents, but a lot of people online were left with burning questions.

“Guys, who is this random family at the end of Squid Game?” one person captioned a TikTok, which has since been viewed over 1.3 million times.

“Genuinely, why did they show this? It was so off topic and horrible direction,” one person wrote underneath, as another pointed out, “If anyone was confused, that just means you don’t pay attention to the whole show.”

Here’s an explanation of who Cheol and the random family at the end of Squid Game are, without the condescending tone of that last comment.

Who is Kang Cheol in Squid Game season three?

Look, after three seasons, literally hundreds of players, and in another language no less, you’re bound to get your wires crossed at least once – I fully thought Bak Jeong-bae was Cho Sang-woo for a solid two episodes last season.

The origins of Kang Cheol go back to season one, as he was the younger brother of Kang Sae-byeok, the North Korean defector who was portrayed as one of the main characters in the show’s inaugural season. Their mother was deported back to North Korea by Chinese authorities, leaving Cheol in an orphanage as his sister tried to win him back.

Sae-byeok came third in her games, behind Sang-woo and Gi-hun, but she made the latter promise to rescue her brother from the orphanage. Player 456 was true to his word, as always, and left Kang Cheol to be cared for by Sang-woo’s mother. We’ll just ignore the fact that it was her son who killed Cheol’s sister, shall we?

As we saw at the end of Squid Game season three, Cheol was finally able to reunite with his mother after a lawyer group helped her cross the border. It was the same group that was helping Kang No-eul leave South Korea.

Basically, it was a nice way to tie off a loose end.
