Last weekend, PinkPantheress performed a sold-out show at the O2 Academy in Brixton as part of her tour for her second album, Fancy That. In a video going viral across socials, Pink took a sign out of someone’s head that says “take off your wig”. She laughed and showed the sign to the crowd before handing it back.
“I just had to show everyone the craftsmanship,” she said. “This isn’t a wig, I don’t know what lies you’ve been fed.”
Even though PinkPantheress, real name Victoria Beverley Walker, played along, people online are not happy about this fan’s sign.
“They would never say this to Sabrina,” says one X post with over 1ook likes.

“Like not even to get all ‘friend who’s too woke’ but the way stans treat black artists (especially the white ones) and the jokes they say are so…” said a comment, agreeing with the original poster.
“This is a bit racially charged,” said another heavily-liked X post.
Lots of people are pointing out the microagression of making jokes surrounding a black woman’s hair. Wigs are widely used by pop stars to elevate their looks, and some feel the jokes surrounding PinkPantheress’ wig single her out unfairly.
But other PinkPantheress fans feel differently about the situation.
“It’s because she light-heartedly revealed that she shaved her head and is bald under the wig,” said one X comment with several hundred likes. “I’m fairly certain if Sabrina said that same thing, a fan would also make this cheeky remark.”
Other people are echoing the same sentiment, saying that PinkPantheress is in on the joke herself.
A video that the singer reposted on TikTok earlier this year first revealed that her signature hairstyle is actually a wig, and got over two million likes.

In an interview with Capital 1Xtra, PinkPantheress talked about her frustrations surrounding people talking about her wig.
“It’s when they say your wig looks nice,” she said. “Why can’t you just say my hair looks nice?”
Sabrina Carpenter also poked fun at the rumours of her wearing a wig in a photoshoot for Interview Mag’s physical issue, where she posed in a bold cap surrounded by blonde wigs.
