A small plane has nosedived and crashed into a busy highway in Italy.

Traffic cameras captured the moment the plane crashed into the A21 motorway in Brescia province at around noon today.

The plane erupted into a huge fireball and was completely destroyed as it hit the ground.

It somehow did not hit any other vehicles as it crashed to the ground, but two vehicles did drive through the flames.

Two motorists were injured in the plane crash, and were sent to a nearby hospital to be treated for non-life-threatening injuries, local media reported.

Both people on board the plane, believed to be a 75-year-old man and a 60-year-old woman, were killed in the crash.

Traffic was suspended on the motorway while firefighters tackled the huge blaze. The road surface was badly damaged by the fire, spilled fuel, and debris from the wreckage.

An investigation into the cause of the crash has now been launched.

The plane had taken off from the Gagnano Trebbiense runway in the Piacenza region, but rules for ‘ultralight’ planes like the one involved meant it did not have to declare a destination upon takeoff.

A consultant from the National Agency for Flight Safety is set to arrive in the area today, and the public prosecutor’s office for the region has opened a manslaughter case, local media said.
