Recently, plans were unveiled for a new cocktail bar Mono Loco in Lancaster city centre, offering a “high-end” and “welcoming” experience for its customers, with a tropical jungle theme.
This proposal, made by owner Tony Martinez under The Cocktail Experience Ltd., includes an application for a “change of use” of the Class E premises at 52 Market Street (previously a St. Johns Hospice charity shop), as well as a proposed floor plan.
The bar has proposed opening hours of 10am-11pm on Monday-Thursday and Sundays, whilst Fridays and Saturdays would see a later closure of 12am. During these hours, Mono Loco promises to be a “cocktail theatre” where guests can enjoy a range of flamboyant drinks, and even partake in Molecular Mixology masterclasses.

According to the planning statement, Martinez made his vision for Mono Loco’s interior design very clear and inline with the “jungle-luxe” theme, aiming to include seating at “various heights” to accommodate different physical need, dimmed ambient lighting for a laid-back atmosphere and various wall art (created by local collaborations) and plants to add to the intended aesthetic.
The space will boast booths, high tables, plush chairs and a back-lit bar, with the aim of creating a cosy yet elegant ambience throughout both daytime and evenings.

Just last week, Martinez received notice that permission has been granted for his plans to go ahead within the Grade II listed building.
His planning statement submitted to Lancaster City Council, puts much emphasis on the commitment the business will have to environmental sustainability, such as, no single-plastics will be used, lighting will only be sourced from LEDs, their use of a green energy supplier, the use of low-carbon and made on-site ingredients to reduce food miles. Mono Loco’s goal is also to become carbon-neutral within the first year of the business opening.
Mono Loco will also bring numerous other benefits to Lancaster, such as creating up to 10 new jobs, enhancing the night-time economy of the city and also giving the option of low and non-alcoholic drink options to customers too.
