A Polish Air Force intercepted this Friday a Russian reconnaissance plane in the Baltic Seathe third incident in this area in less than a week, Warsaw military authorities announced.
Polish forces reported that the Russian Il-20 did not have a known flight plan and traveled with aircraft identification device (‘transponder’) offa practice that represents a potential threat to the safety of civil air traffic.
The military command confirmed that “Polish pilots managed to intercept, identify and escort the foreign aircraft following NATO procedures” and added that, although Polish airspace was not violated, “the repetition of these incidents highlights the existing tension”.
The Polish military also stressed that it will respond “to any provocation” together with other NATO allies, a message similar to those transmitted in recent weeks by other countries on the eastern border of the Atlantic Alliance.
