This Saturday, Pope Leo XIV defended Christian marriage against models of union, “often fleeting and selfish”, which he considers can make the family model seem “outdated and boring”.
“Among the vocations to which men and women are called by God, marriage is one of the noblest and most elevated”, stated the pontiff, in a message addressed to the Bishop of Séez (France), regarding the 10th anniversary of the canonization of the holy spouses Luís and Zélia Martin, parents of Saint Teresa of Ávila.
“In these troubled and disorienting times, when so many falsehoods against models of union — often fleeting, individualistic and selfish — are presented to young people with bitter and disappointing fruits, the family, as the Creator conceived it, can seem outdated and boring”, warned Leo XIV.
The example of Luís and Zélia Martin
In response, the Pope proposed the example of Luís and Zélia Martin as “a luminous and enthusiastic model for the generous souls who chose this path” and recalled that the couple were the first to be canonized as such.
Leo XIV described them as an “exemplary couple” and an example for those who commit themselves to “this path of fidelity and fruitfulness”.
“This is, therefore, the model of couple that the Holy Church presents to young people who wish — perhaps hesitantly — to embark on such a beautiful adventure: a model of fidelity and attention to others, a model of fervor and perseverance in faith, of Christian education of children, of generosity in the exercise of charity and social justice. A model also of confidence in the face of trials”, he described.

Stressing that the Carmelite saint’s parents lived their faith “in ordinary, everyday life”, the Pope described them as part of the “immense multitude of saints next door”, a term used by the late Pope Francis.
Finally, he encouraged Christian spouses to “persevere courageously” in their vocation, placing Christ at the center of their decisions and showing their children “the boundless love and tenderness” of God.
