Popular MLB Scout Found Dead in Hotel Room at 59 Years Old

A beloved longtime Major League Baseball scout was found dead in his hotel room on Friday.

Scott Littlefield, the Texas Rangers’ player personnel special assistant with more than 30 years of scouting experience, was discovered deceased in his Houston hotel room. He was 59.

The cause of death for Littlefield is an apparent heart attack, reports USA TODAY. The baseball lifer had undergone heart surgery two years ago.

Littlefield’s untimely passing has rocked the Rangers organization, which is playing a home series against the Miami Marlins this weekend.

A ‘devastating’ loss

Rangers president of baseball operations Chris Young memorialized Littlefield in a heartfelt statement released on Saturday.

“The Texas Rangers are devastated by the passing of Scott Littlefield,” said Young. “Scott was one of the most respected scouts in Major League Baseball who had an incredible impact on this organization. His voice was influential in all aspects of our baseball operation from professional, amateur, and international scouting to Major League player evaluation. He was an invaluable resource and advisor.

“More importantly, he was one of the most genuine and caring individuals in the game. The Littlefields are a baseball family with his two children and two brothers all working for MLB teams. Several of us were just with Scott in Houston this week, and his passion for our team never waned.

“I join the entire Rangers family in sending our thoughts and prayers to his wife Heather, children Tyler and Erika and all of Scott’s family.”

Scott Littlefield’s baseball resume

  • Scout, Pittsburgh Pirates (1997-2004)
  • Scout, San Diego Padres (2005-09)
