One of the most popular shows on Paramount+ will draw to a close next season, with a shorter season order than usual. Mayor of Kingstown, the crime-thriller series co-created by Taylor Sheridan (Yellowstone, 1923, Tulsa King, Landman) and actor-turned-showrunner Hugh Dillon (Twin Peaks, Degrassi: The Next Generation), has been ordered a fifth and final season by the network.
The final season of the show is likely to premiere in 2026, in keeping with the consistent scheduling of the series, which is roughly one season a year since its debut in November 2021.
According to a report by Deadline, Mayor of Kingstown season 5 will consist of eight episodes, down from the usual ten-episode order during the show’s run. The outlet also highlighted that the show’s fourth season failed to break into Nielsen’s originals Top 10 ratings, which, when factoring in the high cost of Taylor Sheridan shows, may explain why a few episodes were shaved off for the series’ conclusion.
Additionally, Paramount+ is undergoing a network reconstruction, following the acquisition of parent company Paramount Global by Skydance Media in August last year. Following this change in leadership, Sheridan announced plans in October 2025 to leave Paramount, having struck a new film and television deal with NBCUniversal. The deal is set to begin on January 1, 2029 — with 2028 being the final year of Sheridan’s contract with Paramount.
Mayor of Kingstown struggled critically in its first season, scoring just 33% on Rotten Tomatoes. However, the Jeremy Renner-led series pulled in 2.6 million viewers, making it Paramount Network’s most-watched scripted premiere since 2018, and certifying a new season would be on its way.
The second season scored an improvement at 50%, with a 78% for season three and a perfect 100% score for its latest outing. The final season is set to see the return of new cast member Edie Falco, best known for her Emmy Award-winning role as Carmela Soprano on the iconic HBO series The Sopranos.
