Portuguese swimmer Hannah Caldas was suspended by the International Swimming Federation for a period of five years for refusing to take a gender verification test.
The athlete born 47 years ago in Vizela and residing in the United States will be suspended until October 18, 2030 and all her results obtained between June 19, 2022 and October 17, 2024 will be disqualified.
“During the investigation, the International Swimming Federation asked Ms. Caldas to undergo a chromosome test – at her expense – to prove compliance with the general gender policy requirement. The test was required even after Ms. Caldas had provided World Aquatics with her birth certificate, which identified her as female.”explained, in a statement, the New York Swimming Federation, on behalf of Caldas, in response to the decision of the entity that governs the sport worldwide.
“Chromosomal tests are invasive and expensive procedures”argues the Portuguese athlete, who would have to bear all the costs. “My health plan refuses to cover this type of test because it is not medically necessary.”he added, stressing that “no North American state requires genetic testing for sporting events like these”.
