The Federal Cabinet’s recently published poverty and wealth report caused a stir in Germany. It shows that 17.6 percent of the population have to go without essential goods and services due to poverty. This alarming figure highlights the growing social inequality in the country and calls for clear political action.
Between 2010 and 2020, incomes rose in all classes, but higher earners benefited significantly more than low earners. Inflation has particularly hit the lower income bracket disproportionately hard. Despite a slight reduction in wealth inequality, the concentration of wealth among the richest ten percent of households remains extremely high.
Critics such as poverty researcher Christoph Butterwegge complain that although the report provides extensive data, it lacks concrete statements about the causes of inequality and measures to combat it. Political reactions to the report are mixed. While the Green politician Timon Dzienus describes the unequal distribution of wealth as “poison for our society”, the CDU politician Ottilie Klein is committed to economic growth and reforms such as the immediate investment program to promote more employment.
