Russia launched a new attack on the Ukrainian border region of Chernihiv on Monday, knocking out power to swaths of the north, including the main town outside the defunct Chernobyl nuclear power plant, officials said.
The local energy company in the area said that the latest attack targeted an energy site, but it did not specify it.
Yuri Fomichev, mayor of Slavutych, which is 45 kilometers west of the Chernobyl plant in the Kiev region, reported via the Telegram application that electricity was cut off in part of the town due to the attack.
The head of the Kyiv Metropolitan Region also said that emergency teams were working to restore power.
Reuters was unable to independently verify reports of the attack, and there has been no comment yet from Russia.
The Russian attacks with drones and missiles in the past few weeks have focused on the Ukrainian electricity network and the gas sector as winter approaches, amid the non-stop war that has been ongoing for more than 3 and a half years.
The bombing of Kiev and other parts of Ukraine earlier this month led to power outages for more than a million people.
Russian attacks this month forced Ukraine to suspend the operation of a number of key gas facilities, leaving Kiev in need of more imports..
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday that Kiev may import $2 billion worth of gas from Europe, the United States and Azerbaijan this winter.
Ukraine has also launched long-range attacks on Russian energy targets, including at least 58 attacks on key sites since the beginning of last August.
