Prison guards reach agreement with the Government and give up general strike

Prison guards will start receiving full overtime, following an agreement to be signed on Wednesday with the Minister of Justice, which also includes other demands from the class, according to the union.

The president of the National Union of the Prison Guard Corps (SNCGP), Frederico Morais, told the Lusa agency that the structure considered participating in the general strike on December 11th and that it had a press conference scheduled for Tuesday morning, which it ended up canceling because the Ministry of Rita Alarcão Júdice agreed to an agreement that covers the main demands.

According to the union leader, the agreement, which will be signed on Wednesday afternoon, in addition to the payment of all overtime, includes statutory changes from January onwards, including faster competitions, equal to those of the PSP and GNR, and promotions based on seniority as in those two security forces.

Frederico Morais told Lusa that given the guarantee of signing this agreement with the supervisory authority, the union’s management decided to cancel its participation in the general strike on December 11th.

The SNCGP is part of the Permanent Coordinating Committee of Unions and Associations of Professionals of the Security Forces and Services (CCP), which also brings together representatives of the PSP unions, the socio-professional associations of the GNR, Maritime Police (PM) and the Food and Economic Security Authority (ASAE).

Asked by Lusa whether the dissolution of the general strike through the agreement to be signed does not compromise the union within the (CCP), Frederico Morais replied that the structure “is in solidarity” with the principles of the general strike, but that it will not join as the supervision responded favorably “to some crucial points” of the negotiations, which will continue beyond the signing of the agreement.

The union leader said that this entire situation was communicated and discussed with the CCP.

On the sidelines of the start of the new training course for magistrates at the Center for Judicial Studies, the Minister of Justice did not comment on the agreement and admitted to journalists that it was “with surprise” that she learned of the prison guards’ intention to strike.

“In the negotiation processes, if there is a topic to discuss, it is discussed within the house. Since we took office, we have had several meetings with prison guards. We have made a great effort to seek consensus”, said Rita Alarcão Júdice.
