A prison officer and an inmate accused of having an affair and smuggling contraband have appeared in court.

Alicia Novas, 19, is accused of misconduct in public office after allegedly entered ‘into a sexual relationship’ with Declan Winkless, 30, at HMP Five Wells, East Midlands, over several months last year.

She is also accused of failing to report his possession of a phone and cannabis, and giving him her phone number.

According to a second charge, she allegedly provided information about whether prison authorities suspected Winkless of wrongdoing.

Winkless is accused of encouraging and assisting in both offences.
