Producers call the Government’s ‘agreement’ on corn prices an insult


This Monday, corn producers rejected the price of 6,050 pesos per ton of white corn announced by the Government, which they described as “mockery” and “insult to the Mexican countryside.”

At the same time, The producers warned that the protests and road blockades will continue until their demand to set the minimum price of corn at 7,200 pesos is met.

The Peasant Agricultural Movement (MAC) published a statement in which he assured that “there is no agreement” with the Government and warned that “the fight continues and intensifies.”

“It’s a mockery! The Government insults the Mexican countryside!” he stated.

The MAC described the price of 6,050 Mexican pesos as a “handout”, a “misery and a direct insult to those who feed this country.”

In addition, reiterated its demand for 7,200 pesos per ton of corn, one of the key crops in the population’s diet, as well as 6,000 pesos per ton of sorghum.

The producers also expressed that “patience is over” and the “false” dialogue tables, and pointed out that what was a “proposal” became a “non-negotiable national demand.”

“What they offer is not a price, it is a sentence of hunger. And we are not going to accept it. President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo: Listen to the roar of the countryside!” they explained in the statement.

In addition, they called on all producers in Mexico to “close ranks” and not take “one step back.”
They added that today’s blockades and demonstrations were carried out “peacefully, but with iron determination.”

Previously, Mexico’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Agriculture) announced such a price “agreement” in the western states of Guanajuato, Jalisco and Michoacán.

Throughout this day, producers and farmers from at least 17 states in the country carried out mobilizations and blockades on different roads throughout the country.

Convened by the MAC and the National Union of Agricultural Workers (UNTA), The protesters paralyzed roads in Sinaloa, Chihuahua, Tamaulipas, Jalisco, Nayarit, Michoacán, Zacatecas, Guanajuato, Hidalgo, Querétaro, Sonora, Baja California, Durango, Tlaxcala, State of Mexico, Colima, Chiapas and Puebla.
