Organizers expect millions of people to take to the streets this Saturday (October 18), across the US, in the second protest “No Kings in America” (There are no kings in America, in Portuguese), which aims to denounce what they consider to be the growing authoritarianism of North American President Donald Trump.
According to the Associated Press, protests are planned in more than 2,500 locations in the 50 states – from the country’s largest city, New York, to small rural communities, such as East Glacier Ridge, in Montana, with around 300 inhabitants.
“This will be, without a doubt, the biggest day of protest in American history”said Lisa Gilbert, co-president of Public Citizen, which is helping organize the protests, as cited by USA Today. “Since the last time we did this, people have become much more aware of what is wrong with this Administration.”
From operations against immigrants, to promises to use federal power to influence midterm elections, to limits on press freedom or retaliation against political opponents and the deployment of federal troops in cities presided over by Democrats, there are many problems that organizers point out. This protest also takes place in the middle of shutdown.
