Sony announces the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, and PlayStation 5 Pro are going up in prices.
In an official statement on the PlayStation site, they announced all three gaming consoles will increase by $50 in response to ongoing U.S. tariff issues.
“Similar to many global businesses, we continue to navigate a challenging economic environment,” said Isabelle Tomatis, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Vice President, Global Marketing, in a short statement on the site.
“As a result, we’ve made the difficult decision to increase the recommended retail price for PlayStation 5 consoles in the U.S. starting on August 21.”
With the new increase in prices, the PS5 will now retail for $549.99. The PS5 Digital Edition will similarly retail for $499.99, and the PS5 Pro, meanwhile, will retail for $749.99.
Earlier this year, Sony also announced that the PS5 would get a price increase again in Europe, Australia, and New Zealand. Sony had originally raised the prices back in 2022.
They commented on the increase due to “a challenging economic environment, including high inflation and fluctuating exchange rates.”
In Europe and the UK, the PS5 is now €100/£70 more expensive compared to when it was originally launched. Australia saw an AUD $80 increase on the PS5, with the digital edition getting an increase of AUD $150. In New Zealand, the standard PS5 is now NZD $130 more than when it launched. The digital version also increased by NZD $210.
The news of the PS5’s increase in cost also comes after Sony raised the price of the original Nintendo Switch earlier this month. It was originally priced at $$299.99 compared to its new cost of $339.99. Sony originally explained the changes as “based on market conditions.”
Sony hasn’t made further comments on price increases for other consoles or related accessories.
