PS6 is eight times faster than PS5 according to tech specs leak

A full breakdown of the PS6 technical specifications has been released by a leaker, promising huge boosts in ray tracing and backwards compatibility.

Ahead of the fifth anniversary of the PlayStation 5 this November, rumours have escalated around Sony’s plans for the PlayStation 6.

There’s already been a stack of leaks about a potential handheld to coincide with the new console, along with suggestions it will launch sometime in 2027.

While there’s been some details of the PlayStation 6 specifications, including that it will be less powerful than the next Xbox console, a reliable leaker has posted a comprehensive breakdown of what to expect from Sony’s next home system.

These specifications come from YouTuber Moore’s Law Is Dead, who has been accurate in the past about the Nintendo Switch 2’s capabilities. According to his latest video, the PlayStation 6 will represent a more noticeable leap than the jump from the PlayStation 4 to the PlayStation 5.

If you want specifics on the hardware details, Sony’s next system will use an AMD semi-custom APU codenamed Orion. According to the leak from ‘recent documents’, the APU will sport seven-to-eight Zen 6c cores and two Zen 6 low power cores, for a total of up to nine or ten cores depending on if one is disabled.

It will have a GDDR7 memory controller with support for up to 40GB of RAM, with a 160-bit memory bus and 32 GT/s (giga transfers per second).

On the GPU side, Orion apparently features 52-54 RDNA 5 CUs (computer units) clocked at between 2.6GHz and 3.0GHz with 10MB of L2 cache, for an estimated performance of 34-40 teraflops. This will be just under 2.5 times the amount of teraflops when compared to the PS5 Pro according to the YouTuber, so it will be ‘quite a bit faster’.

Moore’s Law Is Dead states the PlayStation 6 will have backwards compatibility with the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4. He goes on to state the system will have a detachable disc drive as well, supporting prior rumours to that effect.

The insider goes on to make some alterations to his prior leaks, claiming the console’s rasterization performance (which relates to rendering of 3D models) is estimated to now be 2.5-3x higher than the base PlayStation 5. He also claims the ray tracing performance will see a 6-12x jump from Sony’s prior console.

With all this combined, along with the expected inclusion of AMD’s FSR4 upscaling tech, he estimates the PlayStation 6 will be four to eight times faster than the base PlayStation 5. In comparison, he notes the base PlayStation 5 was around eight times faster than the PlayStation 4.

While this might suggest we’ll see a similar leap in power from the PlayStation 5 to the PlayStation 6, Moore’s Law Is Dead believes, with rumoured new AI features and these big improvements to ray tracing (supposedly equivalent to the RTX 5090 graphics card), the technical jump will be more noticeable.

‘I definitely do think the next generation of consoles is going to feel like possibly a bigger leap than the last one’, the YouTuber said, in summary.

He added: ‘I think people would notice a cranking up of ray tracing and the new AI features far more than they would notice going from like 1440p 60fps on a PS4 Pro to 1800p 60fps on the PlayStation 5.

‘There’s going to be fundamental things the PS6 and even the PS6 handheld can do with AI that the PS5 could not do.’

When he talks about AI he means benign technology used to increase resolution and frame rate, not something that’s suddenly going to render every character with six fingers.

The insider supports prior rumours that the PlayStation 6 will launch around autumn 2027, with manufacturing allegedly planned for mid-2027.

Sony has not confirmed when we’ll see the PlayStation 6, or exactly how powerful it will be, but the company did state the console is ‘top of mind’ in June earlier this year.
