The national Public Administration strike, called by Common Frontis today affect schools, hospitals, public transport, courts and tax offices across the country. The strike was also joined by doctors, nurses and teachersin a protest that aims to stop disinvestment in public services and demand more significant salary increases.
A National Federation of Doctors (Fnam) also scheduled a strike for this Friday, accusing the Minister of Health of “refuse to truly negotiate” a medical career. Nurses demand a collective agreement “without setbacks” and the defense of a National Health Service “with all doors open”. Teachers and researchers, through FENPROFjoin the strike to demand better salary conditions and the valorization of public schools and science.
Garbage collection stopped in several municipalities
During Wednesday night, The strike has already been felt in garbage collection in several municipalities, with full containers in Loures, Moita, Palmela and Seixal. O Local Government Workers Union (STALLED) reports adherence close to 95% in Vila Franca de Xira, 90% in Amadora and 80% in Évora. Also in Lisbon, Sintra, Almada and Funchal, urban hygiene services were seriously affected.
According to STAL, these first hours of the strike confirm “deep discontent” among workers in the Local Administration and municipal companies, particularly in the waste collection and urban cleaning sectors.
Government accused of “impoverishment policy”
The strike was called against what the unions describe as the Government’s “policy of impoverishment”. PSD-CDSsupported by He arrives and by Liberal Initiative and with the “connivance” of the PS. The coordinator of the Common Front, Sebastião Santana, stated in a press conference that the Executive “you are buying social conflict” by maintaining a State Budget that “degrades working conditions and disinvests in public services”.
The union leader demands a minimum salary increase of 150 euros — around 15% — and accuses the Government of not having the “political will” to change budget priorities. “There is margin. What there is not is will”, he said.
Salary increases below expectations
The State Budget proposal for 2026 foresees increases in 56.58 euros (2.15%) for the public servicea value considered insufficient by the unions. The salary base is expected to rise to 934.99 euros, with progressions and promotions included, for a total of 1,248 million euros in personnel expenses. The Common Front considers, however, that the labor reform package presented by the Government is “shameful” and represents an “earthwork of public services”.
A strike with political weight
The secretary general of CGTP-INTiago Oliveira, will be at the end of the morning at Hospital de São João, in Porto, to support health workers. The union leader has already warned that, if the Government does not back down, a general strike could be called.
The Common Front, which brings together 29 unions from all sectors of the Statespeaks of a “big strike” and guarantees that today’s mobilization is a warning to the Government. “There are 760 thousand workers who support public services and cannot be ignored”, highlighted Sebastião Santana.
