Rain and severe thunderstorms are expected in KwaZulu-Natal – Bundlezy

Rain and severe thunderstorms are expected in KwaZulu-Natal

KwaZulu-Natal is set to experience widespread showers and thunderstorms this weekend, as a cold front sweeps through the southeastern parts of the country. Rainfall is expected to vary from isolated to scattered, with heavier activity possible in several areas.

“KwaZulu-Natal is likely to receive showers and thunderstorms, especially from Sunday through Monday, as the system pushes moisture inland,” said Phemelo Zonke, a weather forecaster.

Severe thunderstorm risks

The South African Weather Service has warned of severe thunderstorms that may bring heavy downpours, damaging winds, hail, and lightning. These conditions could disrupt daily life, particularly in coastal and inland communities.

“Thunderstorms may result in strong winds and heavy rainfall, which could pose risks to infrastructure and safety,” added Zonke.

In addition, areas along the eastern Free State, Mpumalanga, and Limpopo may also experience showers extending into KwaZulu-Natal, contributing to widespread instability over the weekend.

Temperatures and next week’s outlook

Temperatures in coastal cities such as Durban are expected to remain mild, while inland areas could feel slightly cooler due to the rainy conditions. By Monday, showers are expected to ease but may linger in some northeastern parts of the province.

Residents are encouraged to take precautions against lightning and flooding in low-lying areas. With a cold front system approaching from the southwest, KwaZulu-Natal may continue to experience unsettled weather into next week.
