Rains in Mexico: Neighbors of Poza Rica raise their voices about the disaster

In the private Petirrojos, one of the lowest streets in the Las Gaviotas neighborhood, Melina Cruz Vera has been trying to return home for almost a week. The water level still reaches above his knee and the stench, he mentioned, “is already unbearable.”

From the entrance he observes the remains of his living room, the swollen mattresses and the dismantled furniture left by the current of the Cazones River.

“What we are experiencing is unfair. We lost everything, everything, absolutely everything, and they still force us to go into our homes when we can’t even get through. There is a stench, a very strong fetid aroma, like human flesh; Several of us already have diarrhea, vomiting and fever, and there are no medical brigades. I had to take antibiotics on my own,” he counted.

The 48-year-old woman explains that the water came in with force on the night of October 10, destroying her home and her assets.. Since then, he has taken refuge in his grandmother’s house while trying to rescue what little is left.

“The mud covered my feet, my tennis shoes got buried, I had to put on some that I found lying around. “I haven’t been able to enter my house because everything is still flooded,” he said.

Melina denounced that yesterday the nation’s servants, who carried out a house-to-house census, pressured them to return to uninhabitable homes, without machinery or clearing the streets. “They say they are going to do the house-to-house census, but you can’t even get through. What we need are trash cans, trucks to take out the garbage and doctors, because there is already infection here”he insisted.

He also claimed that the tragedy could have been avoided. “The municipal president himself said that the money for the retaining wall did not appear. That work should have been done by Conagua, but it was never built. If it had been there, the hit of water would not have destroyed us like this,” he stated.

In addition, he accused that the disaster was worsened by the state government’s lack of foresight. “Since Fonden disappeared, the governor had to pay disaster insurance, but she didn’t. Now they say there is no money, and meanwhile we are here, among the garbage and the disease,” he reproached.

Among the chaos, Melina found relief with the support of her neighbors, who with water, food and clothing. “We do have to thank them, because they brought us hot food when we had nothing,” he noted.

But, yesterday, when the Army entered, the Secretary of the Navy (Semar) and civil protection teams insisted that “Government help arrived too late, when the outbreaks of infection were already beginning and children were getting sick.”
