Rand Water maintenance to impact the following Joburg suburbs this Christmas

This follows Rand Water’s announcement that it will undertake major planned maintenance work across its network in December 2025 and January 2026.

The utility will undertake the work in three phases, with each phase affecting different parts of Johannesburg Water’s supply systems.

The maintenance is expected to result in varying levels of water interruptions – from reduced pressure to periods of no water – depending on the area and system affected.

Best time to do it

City officials say the timing of the work is intentional, with December and early January being the most practical time to perform large-scale maintenance while minimising disruption.

“With schools, industries and many businesses closing for the holidays – and many residents travelling – overall water demand is significantly lower,” Rand Water said in a statement.

The purpose of the project is to strengthen long-term water reliability by improving the efficiency and stability of Rand Water’s infrastructure.

Back-up supply arrangements in Johannesburg

“Once the work is completed, residents should note that some systems may take time to fully recover,” the utility added.

High demand in certain areas can slow down the process, meaning alternative supply arrangements (such as water tankers) will remain in place until normal pressure is restored.

Johannesburg Water says it will ensure affected neighbourhoods receive support throughout the maintenance period.

Regular updates will be issued across the City’s communication platforms, including ward councillor groups, to keep residents informed during the planned maintenance work.
