After a shaky start to the season, it seems that Manchester United has finally begun to regain its balance and level under the leadership of Portuguese coach Ruben Amorim, who led the team to a series of important victories, most notably against Liverpool and Brighton, to return confidence and collective performance to the ranks of the “Red Devils.”
Behind this clear improvement, there are 4 main reasons that contributed to changing the team’s appearance and significantly raising its morale:
- Trust and responsibility after the Brentford crisis
After the harsh defeat against Brentford last September, Dutch defender Matthijs de Ligt made an emotional statement in which he called on his teammates to take responsibility and eliminate individual mistakes. This call was a turning point within the locker room, as it restored discipline and focus to the team, and created a new spirit of collective commitment and fighting spirit.

- A serious ranger and a new philosophy in building
Since the debut of young goalkeeper Sean Lammens against Sunderland, United’s way of getting the ball has changed, because the Belgian international has a rare ability to play with his feet, which has made the opposition’s pressure less effective.
In addition, the long ball directed at striker Benjamin Sisko became a strategic weapon in Amorim’s approach.
The Portuguese coach explained, “When teams press man-to-man, you need to break the pressure with the first ball, and we now have the strength for that.” This change brought simplicity back to United’s attacking style, and reduced defensive errors during the build-up process.
- Higher pressing and braver defence
Amorim adopted a more aggressive high-pressing approach, taking advantage of the speed and flexibility of defenders such as Luke Shaw, along with Harry Maguire’s solidity deep down. Regarding this, Amorim confirms that his philosophy is based on tactical flexibility, and he added, “When we have defenders who are able to press high, we play forward with more confidence. If we win the ball, we have players in front of the goal who are able to score from half a chance.”
This defensive shift made the team more balanced and more courageous in recovering the ball from the opponent’s areas.
- Attacking harmony between Amad Diallo and Mbwemo
After a difficult period for Amad Diallo, the young player came back strongly, forming a great duo with Brian Mbwemu. The duo showed great harmony in attacking transitions, and were decisive in the victories over Liverpool and Brighton.
Amorim praised the duo’s performance by saying that they “work like a machine, very fast, have excellent understanding, and constantly change positions. It is very difficult to defend against them.”

Picking fruits
Today’s Manchester United is not the same team that struggled at the beginning of the season, and Amorim knows how to balance realism and ambition, a young goalkeeper with great confidence, a bold defense, and a mobile attack, and the Portuguese coach’s project is finally beginning to bear fruit.
The current version of United seems more cohesive and more determined to prove itself, and Amorim is trying to restore the team in 3 stages:
- Returning to his natural place among the Big 6 in England
- Participation next season in the Champions League
- Competing again for the Premier League title
Manchester United currently occupies sixth place in the English Premier League, and is preparing to face its host Nottingham Forest tomorrow, Saturday, amid high confidence and a positive atmosphere inside the dressing room.
