If you missed the Red Arrows fly past on VE Day, there are plenty of opportunities to spot them today.

The RAF jet pilots will take to the skies today across the UK as part of the commemoration of VJ Day, or Victory over Japan Day.

If you look up at the right time, you can see the aerobatic display team flying past your home.

They are also scheduled to fly at dozens of military air shows today alone.

What is VJ Day?

Victory over Japan Day is marked every year on August 15, the day when Imperial Japan surrendered to the Allied forces.

It marks the end of the Second World War 80 years ago.

Although Nazi Germany – part of the Axis powers – had already surrendered in Europe in May, its ally Japan had still been engaged in fighting, especially around the Pacific.

Japan’s surrender came just days after the brutal detonation of the atomic bombs by the US on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

In Japan, August 15 is honoured as an official day of remembrance and time to reflect on peace, eight decades after the devastating war ended.

King Charles sent an audio speech today, reflecting on the horrors experienced by prisoners of war and innocent civilians ‘whose suffering reminds us that war’s true cost extends beyond battlefields, touching every aspect of life.’
