LOS ANGELES / LONDON (IT BOLTWISE) – A new study shows that introducing peanuts into babies’ diets early can significantly reduce the rate of peanut allergies in children. A new study has found that introducing peanuts into babies’ diets has led to a significant decrease in peanut allergies in children. These findings come a decade after groundbreaking research showed that feeding peanut products to babies can reduce the risk of allergy by over 80%. The current results show that allergy rates in children under three fell by about 43% after recommendations for introducing peanuts were expanded in 2017.
Parents were previously advised to avoid common allergens such as peanuts in infants. But in 2015, the guidelines for high-risk children changed, and in 2017 they were further expanded. Dr. David Hill, an allergist at Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, emphasized the importance of these findings. Even a stabilization in allergy rates would be remarkable, but the actual decline is impressive.
The study analyzed electronic health data from approximately 120,000 children in 50 pediatric practices. The researchers found that allergy rates fell despite the fact that only a portion of doctors followed the new guidelines. This shows that the practice of feeding peanuts early and often is effective even outside of clinical trials.
The results highlight the need for policy action to further reduce life-threatening allergy diagnoses. This could include the U.S. Department of Agriculture including peanut products in their baby food programs. The prevalence of food allergies is increasing, with 2.2% of US children having a peanut allergy. In addition to delayed introduction of allergenic foods, cesarean births and antibiotic exposure are other risk factors.
