Refurbishment of iconic 2010 FIFA World Cup stadium extended

The City of eThekwini has submitted a request for an extension to the ongoing R240 million refurbishment of the Moses Mabhida Stadium, originally slated for completion by December 2025.

First announced in October 2024, the multi-phase upgrade aims to modernise the 15-year-old stadium, adding tourist features like a new zip line, air walk viewing platform, and redesigned sky car.

However, city officials say additional urgent structural repairs have delayed the timeline.

During a Community Services Committee meeting held late last week, it was confirmed that a formal request has been made to extend the emergency remedial work contract.

The extension is pending council approval.

‘Structural issues’

“The extension aims to ensure the continued progress of critical repairs necessary to maintain the structural integrity and safety of the facility,” the city said.

Key structural issues being addressed include:

  • Rehabilitation of steel, concrete, and roof structures
  • Corrosion treatment
  • Replacement of damaged roof membranes and arch cladding
  • Removal of corroded sky car infrastructure
  • Improved drainage systems

The city assured the public that phase one of the repairs has already been completed, and that the renovations are being carried out with minimal disruption to ongoing public and sporting activities.

Once finished, the upgraded stadium will meet international safety and event-hosting standards, with several new features:

  • A 60% larger viewing platform with a cantilevered glass floor
  • A redesigned, accessible sky car
  • An upgraded Big Swing and new Zip Line to People’s Park
  • A compression ring walk with panoramic views and bungee jump options
  • Arch and bowl lighting improvements with colour-themed options

The City of eThekwini said it will continue to provide progress updates and emphasised the importance of close monitoring to ensure the project remains on track in terms of quality, compliance, and safety.
