There is a great sense of relief in the sphere of Pedro Sánchez and his Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE, center-left). After two consecutive days of statements at the Supreme Court, Justice did not send José Luis Ábalos, who was the Spanish Prime Minister’s most trusted man, to jail and his companion in the fight for the leadership of the PSOE. Secretary of Organization of the party, deputy and Minister of Transport in two Sánchez governments, he was prosecuted in other cases of alleged corruption.
The instructing magistrate, Leopoldo Puente, decided to keep Ábalos on probation, without changing the precautionary measures of withdrawal of his passport, ban on leaving Spain and obligation to appear in court every fifteen days. Santos Cerdán, Ábalos’ friend and successor in party office, has been in pre-trial detention for associated crimes since June 30.
