A notable trend is emerging in the United States: As the general population becomes increasingly secular, religious activity within the military is increasing. A recent analysis by Ryan Burge, a professor at the John C. Danforth Center at Washington University in St. Louis, highlights that the share of active-duty military personnel who attend religious services at least once a week has increased in recent years. This development stands in contrast to the stagnating or declining number of church attendance among the civilian population.
Between 2010 and 2012, 21% of military personnel attended church weekly, while this proportion increased to 28% in 2022 to 2024. During the same period, the proportion of the civilian population attending church weekly remained constant at 16%. This discrepancy shows that military personnel are about twice as likely as civilians to participate in religious activities.
Burge attributes this trend to so-called ‘selection effects’. Because the U.S. Armed Forces is a volunteer army, it recruits disproportionately many members from states such as Alabama, Florida, Georgia and South Carolina, which tend to be more conservative and religious. This recruiting base may explain why the military appears more religious than the general population.
The importance of religion in the lives of military personnel has also increased. The proportion who view religion as ‘very important’ increased from 39% in 2010-2012 to 44% in 2022-2024. In contrast, this proportion fell from 37% to 30% for civilians. These numbers shed light on the cultural differences between the military and civilian society and could have long-term implications for the dynamics within the armed forces.
