If you’re part of a society at Cardiff Uni you will have attended a social at least once before. This means you’ve definitely had to dress in a crazy outfit and take part in funny challenges.
We all love Wednesday nights, but this week the best one comes with YOLOWEEN commencing. You’ll be seeing these societies dressing in Halloween-themed costumes, so to help we’ve decided which Halloween character some of the societies are. The scarier the better, so social secs – listen up.
Men’s Rugby – Michael Myers (Halloween)
They’re tall, intimidating, and often appear right behind you in YOLO.
Always causing trouble, we all know a rugby boy (whether that’s a good or bad thing remains up for debate), and they’re all the same. They’re often seen lurking around YOLO, or shrewdly running to their social sec’s house at three in the morning. So, what else would they be other than Michael Myers? He lurks around and goes for his kill with no concern for his effect on others.
Cheerleading – Regan MacNeil (The Exorcist)
If you’ve seen cheerleaders perform, you will witness bodies flying in the air and big, dramatic performances, much like in The Exorcist. Instead of sparkly cheerleaders being flung around, it’s Regan MacNeil’s demons.
Committed to training and competitions, cheerleaders know how to perform. When the adrenaline hits on comp day, they transform into someone else and that two-minute performance is over in a flash, much like being possessed by a demon.
Mixed Martial Arts – Harley Quinn (The Joker)
Much like Harley Quinn, whilst on the outside they may appear innocent and sweet, MMA fighters know how to battle. She’s chaotic and rebellious, just like the members in MMA, and when faced against the opponent, they can take them down in an instant and will always be there to fight for Team Cardiff.
Definitely not someone you would want to accidentally spill your VK on in The Taf.
Men’s Football – Ghostface (Scream)

Similar to Ghostface, Cardiff football are masters of strategy and tactics. They know exactly how to torment the opposition, both on and off the pitch. Always striking when you least expect it, they know how to win.
Always the same uniform in YOLO, what else would you be? It never changes, much like Ghostface’s iconic mask. They’ve probably worn the same shirt and trouser combo since freshers. Why not stick to that this year?
Ice hockey – Freddy Krueger (A Nightmare on Elm Street)
Gliding across the rink with an undeniable sense of confidence, they combine athleticism and motivation to score a win…or a kill.
Whether it’s slashing through the ice or their victims, they love to torment the opposition, bringing a psychological intensity to the game. Equal to Freddy Krueger’s haunting presence.
Watch your back Cardiff, you never know what ice hockey players might be plotting.
JOMEC Netball – Cruella de Vil (101 Dalmatians)

Fashionable, glamorous, and always trying to recruit (capture) as many freshers (dalmatians) as they can during Fresher’s Week.
They want to win, and they will. Don’t underestimate JOMEC netball, especially at socials. Their bold personality and determination allows them to succeed on both the pitch and during socials, taking over the streets of Cathays in extravagant costumes.
Law Netball – Elle Woods (Legally Blonde)
Not the typical Halloween scare, but Elle Woods is a perfect mix of smart and stylish.
Whether it’s on the court or in court, law netball doesn’t back down, showing both their resilience and optimism to succeed – much like Elle’s personality.
You’re ready to win costume of the year and have a brilliant defence to back it up. Whip out the pink suit and grab your folders (netball bibs) and dominate the courtroom (YOLO queue).
MedSoc – Dr Frankenstein/Frankenstein
If you have no time to prepare for YOLOWEEN this year, paint yourself green and you’re sorted.
It’s safe to say, medics are the busiest bunch. With the little time they have, a costume that takes less than a minute to put together seems appropriate.
Similar to Frankenstein, MedSoc members are intelligent and ambitious; however, you sometimes find yourself living at the library with your laptop as your best friend. Similar to Frankenstein’s isolated lifestyle.
All-nighters in the library can get to you, and you are often seen wandering around Cathays half asleep.
If you see a green-looking zombie around the Great Hall this year, they could be MedSoc.
Broadway Dance Society – Nina Sayers (Black Swan)

Poised and perfect, Broadway Dance know how to put together an elegant costume.
When on stage, you transform. Displaying an emotional, elegant and perfect performance, your demeanour on stage mirrors Nina’s perfectionist personality.
A Cappella Society – Barden Bellas (Pitch Perfect)
If you do A Cappella, there’s no doubt that part of your inspiration came from Pitch Perfect. You can sing incredibly well and know how to have fun on a night out, always trying to find the best karaoke.
You’re a sisterhood, so why not stick to it? Much like the Barden Bellas, you have the voice of an angel and love to perform. Your individual personalities and voices all come together on stage, creating a perfect harmony.
If you see a flurry of yellow neckerchiefs and get caught up in a riff off in YOLO, you’re probably near Cardiff Uni’s a cappella society.
Drama Society – Elphaba (Wicked)
Articulate and free-thinking, you know how to play a part. Much like Elphaba, you’re easily able to mask your identity when performing, with your true personality showing in front of those who are close to you.
This is your chance to show off your musical theatre nerd knowledge and sing your heart out. Use your magic powers and own the silent disco. There’s no doubt you have been on the edge of your seat, awaiting Wicked: For Good.
