Whether it’s Etsy witches or botched horoscopes, social media loves to get involved in my dating life. Every week there’s a new trend or test to see how compatible I am and every week I fall for it. So the green line theory has been no exception – in fact, I believe this one even more now I know what it means.
Being an over thinker, it’s the perfect mix of science and bullshit to feed my delusion. And now I’m going to drive you crazy with it too.
So, here’s what the green line theory actually is
@jackmacbarstool
The green line theory is basically a concept that looks at the power dynamics in a relationship purely on how the couple stands together in a photo. It’s pretty self explanatory – the person leaning in more is supposed to be seen as less dominant and the more insecure partner and the person who is standing straighter is said to be the most confident.
The test works by drawing lines along the way each person is standing. Loads of celebs have been used as examples of the theory, including Kim K and Kanye West, Jada and Will Smith, Barak and Michelle Obama and Prince Harry and Meghan, Duchess of Sussex.
To break it down, the green lines just look at the axis’ and centre of gravity of each person in a photo – but only in staged photos. The green line theory can’t be applied to candids or photos taken without the couple’s knowledge.

One TikTok user, Jack, explained the different meanings for guys leaning compared to girls. He actually did a whole part series on this and I don’ know who made him the expert, but obviously I watched all four parts. Jack said: “For 90 per cent of guys, leaning is a no no. For women, leaning is a little bit more complicated.
Despite the TikTok psychologists and body language experts going into heavy detail about this, a number of body language experts actually dismissed this, claiming its a simplification and that many other factors influence body language.
And you know what, I feel for the tall girlies who are doing that awkward mini squat or who are bending their neck ever so slightly to appear slightly shorter than their man. Even if the green line theory thinks you’re insecure. Brb whilst we all meticulously scroll back through our photos and spiral for an hour.
