My TikTok For You Page is currently FILLED with one dominating trend – the rare aesthetic domination. Rare aesthetic is for me totally British, an eerie time capsule of a bizarre fever dream in the 2000s that you thought was a unique experience but TikTok is now teaching you was actually universal. Alongside every rare aesthetic video is an absolute banger that soundtracks it, a song that I simply cannot stop humming. I’d never heard of this song before and it’s actually got an interesting history, so here’s where the song is from that’s being used on the viral rare aesthetic TikTok trend right now.
Rare aesthetic: going swimming and being jealous of your mum in the cafe
@laurenzopotenzo Hope this don’t flop #fyp #rareaesthetic #foryou #trend ♬ Gorof (Elixir) (feat. Sahra Dawo) – Dur Dur Band
This took me back, and is truly the perfect example of why this trend is popping off. The trend is basically a nostalgic statement and a lot of pictures of that situation that feel like they majorly transport you back to that time in your life. Alongside it is a song called Gorof (Elixir), by Dur-Dur Band and Sahra Dawo. But what is the origin of this song?
The TikTok version released in 2017, but its origins go back decades
Gorof (Elixir) comes from a compilation album released in 2017 called Sweet As Broken Dates. The compilation restored lost Somali music, and is a restoration. The original singer Sahra Dawo was a prominent figure in Somalian music in the 80s and 90s – and the song hails from back then originally but didn’t see an official release on streaming until 2017.
According to lyrics Genius, the meaning of the song is about how “‘gorof’ is a traditional Somali term for a vessel used to milk livestock, often camels. In Somali culture, sharing a gorof of milk symbolizes friendship and good relationships. The song uses metaphor and repetition to express feelings of longing, unrequited love, and the need for understanding and support.”

This content creator on TikTok embedded above tried to create an English language lyrics version – and it’s gorgeous. Would highly recommend giving it a listen. I cannot get the rare aesthetic TikTok trend banger out my head – truly a random song to go viral but I LOVE when this happens.
