Spotify is in its era of shoving out amazing updates constantly right now, and the one that’s just been released today is one that fans of music (like proper, tech fans) have been gagging for for years. And I really do mean years, because this was first teased since 2021. Spotify has announced that the rollout of its new ‘Lossless’ music quality setting has begun in the UK – with some people today already having got their notification that its arrived on their devices. It’s actually very exciting, but for those less in tune with the benefits here’s what the new Spotify lossless feature and update setting actually does for you.
Apple Music has had it for ages, and now Spotify is caught up
One of the big drivers that the Apple Music lot proclaim when it comes to having it over Spotify is that the sound quality is better. They fume when it’s Spotify Wrapped time, but they did have that over us that Apple Music had lossless quality playback. But now Spotify is finally rolling out lossless and it’s going to change the quality of how your music sounds across all your devices.
The difference is going to the highest music quality available on Spotify, which basically will let you hear new details in songs you couldn’t before. It’s best when you listen to it in wired headphones too, because when you try and do it with bluetooth headphones the sound can be compressed as it transmits.
We’re rolling out our best sound quality, Lossless, to Premium users.

It’s rolling out across this month in the UK – with some getting a pop up notification on Spotify already when they open the app.
You have to turn it on manually on any device you want to use Spotify Lossless on, and to do that:
- Tap your profile icon in the top left.
- Go to Settings & Privacy → Media Quality.
- Select where you want to enable lossless audio: Wi-Fi, cellular, downloads.
People on Twitter are absolutely buzzing, because there were some rumours at first that this would be a new tier of Spotify Premium that would come at a higher price point. Thankfully, Spotify did the right thing and it’s getting rolled out to people who already have Premium right now.
