Human Rights Watch called on the European Union not to back down from plans to impose possible sanctions on Israel after the ceasefire agreement in Gaza.
According to the organization’s deputy director and representative to the European Union institutions, Claudio Francavilla, any European decision against Israel must take into account its gross human rights violations.
He explained that the European Union did not raise the issue of sanctions on Israel until two years after the genocide in Gaza and the killing of 20,000 children, describing this delay as “horrifying.”
He stressed that the proposal to suspend cooperation between the European Union and Israel is based not only on what is happening in Gaza, but also on the ongoing violations in all the occupied Palestinian territories.
It is noteworthy that the European Commission broke its nearly two-year silence regarding Israel’s actions in Gaza, and announced on September 10 last proposals to impose sanctions on Tel Aviv.
The proposals included imposing restrictions, including suspending the provisions for the free transfer of goods within the Association Agreement between the European Union and Israel, and imposing customs duties, in addition to imposing sanctions on settlers who seize the occupied Palestinian territories, and on the Ministers of National Security, Itamar Ben Gvir, and Finance Minister, Bezalel Smotrich.
On October 10, the ceasefire agreement in Gaza entered into force, according to the plan of US President Donald Trump, which, in addition to stopping the war, is based on a gradual withdrawal of the Israeli army, the mutual release of prisoners, and the immediate entry of aid into the Strip.
The ceasefire agreement ended a genocide committed by Israel since October 8, 2023, which lasted for two years, resulting in the death of 68,519 Palestinians, the injury of 170,382 others, most of them children and women, and the destruction of 90% of civilian infrastructure.
