RIP | Maties student found dead in dorm room

A first-year theology student at Stellenbosch University has been found dead in his residence room, sparking sadness and concern across the campus community.

Chris Scheffers, 19, was discovered on Saturday in his room at Dagbreek Men’s Residence, located along Victoria Street.

According to university officials, residence management raised the alarm after noting that Scheffers had not been seen for some time.

Confirmed the incident

Western Cape police confirmed the incident, with spokesperson Captain FC van Wyk stating that officers were called to the scene shortly before midday.

“On arrival, they were escorted to the second floor where they found the body of an unknown male lying on his back on the bed. All personal belongings remained untouched,” he said.

Scheffers was declared dead at the scene by paramedics.

Police say no signs of foul play have been found, but a post-mortem investigation is underway to determine the exact cause of death.

Originally from Riebeek West, Scheffers had moved to Stellenbosch earlier this year to begin his theological studies.

He was described as quiet, kind, and deeply committed to his academic path.

‘Heavy hearts’

Professor Richard Stevens, Stellenbosch University’s acting vice-chancellor for learning and teaching, expressed his condolences.

“It is with heavy hearts that we mourn with the family and friends of Chris Scheffers. We extend our deepest sympathies to all who knew him.”

The university has made trauma counselling and support services available to students and staff affected by the tragedy.

A memorial service is being planned to honour his life.

The investigation remains ongoing.
