Rob and Michele Reiner had plans for Sunday, the day the couple was found murdered inside their Los Angeles home. The All in the Family star and his wife were supposed to spend time with Barack and Michelle Obama.
Michelle Obama revealed during an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” Monday night that she and her husband had scheduled a get-together with the Reiners for Sunday evening.
“We’ve known them for many, many years, and we were supposed to be seeing them that night, last night,” Michelle said, via PEOPLE.
The bodies of Rob, 78, and Michele Reiner were found Sunday night after police were called to their Brentwood residence. Both had been stabbed multiple times and reportedly had their throats slashed.
Nick Reiner, the couple’s troubled 32-year-old son, has been taken into custody on murder charges.
‘Heartbroken’ Barack offers condolences, tribute
While Michelle Obama discussed the planned meetup with the Reiners on Kimmel, Barack shared his thoughts in a heartfelt message on X/Twitter just after midnight Monday.
“Michelle and I are heartbroken by the tragic passing of Rob Reiner and his beloved wife, Michele,” the former president wrote. “Rob’s achievements in film and television gave us some of our most cherished stories on screen. But beneath all of the stories he produced was a deep belief in the goodness of people—and a lifelong commitment to putting that belief into action.
“Together, he and his wife lived lives defined by purpose. They will be remembered for the values they championed and the countless people they inspired. We send our deepest condolences to all who loved them.”
Nick Reiner ‘responsible’ for tragic deaths
Los Angeles police assert Nick Reiner is culpable for the deaths of his parents, and is currently holding him without bail. The case is set to be turned over to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office on Tuesday.
According to reports, the younger Reiner got into a “heated” argument with his father at Conan O’Brien’s Christmas party on Saturday night. He then checked into a Santa Monica hotel in the early morning hours Sunday; staff members allegedly found Nick Reiner’s room “covered” in blood hours later.
Rob Reiner and his wife Michele had reportedly been struggling recently with what next steps to take to help their son, who has battled mental health issues, addiction and homelessness over the years.
