Robbie Williams reveals the exact moment he realised Gen Z don’t even know who he is

Robbie Williams is on a mission to reignite his career. He’s on tour across Europe right now and dropping singles along the way for his upcoming album BRITPOP. This will be the first album from the Angels singer in three years.

But he’s definitely fallen from his peak. Robbie talked to ITV News about the exact moment he realised people around him didn’t know who he was.

“We were on our way somewhere and I had this pink outfit on and it was bejewelled, I looked like Elton John’s nephew,” he said.

“Me? Robbie Williams? Dressed in pink? Walking in London? Are you mad?”

He managed to make it to his restaurant reservation with no issue, but didn’t really think about how little hassle it had been – until it was time to walk through one of the busiest parks in London.

“We walked through Hyde Park. Mate, absolutely zero people were like, ‘There’s Robbie Williams’,” he said. He described the experience as “sobering”.

When the interviewer tried to tell him this incident said more about London as a busy city than him as a celebrity he doubled down.

“I think it’s what it says about me and my career right now.”

In the early 2000s, you couldn’t escape Robbie Williams. Over three nights at Knebworth Park in Hertfordshire, he brought in crowds of 375,000 people, a record he broke and still holds today. He had multiple albums go several times platinum in the UK and was well-known internationally. But this was two decades ago, and the music industry is more saturated than ever.

Late last year, Robbie’s biopic Better Man released in cinemas worldwide, with positive reviews from critics. People online were baffled by two things: Robbie’s decision to have a CGI monkey play his character, and that the movie was happening in general.

“Of all the ‘who asked for this’ moments, this is the most ‘who asked for this’,” one tweet said.

The film ended up making $22.5 million worldwide, falling massively short of its $100 million budget.

Outside of his single Candy trending on TikTok in 2023, it seems Robbie Williams hasn’t caught the attention of Gen Z. His new album is set to release in October, and he’s keen to get as much attention as possible.

“It’s quite important that people know who I am. It’s my job!” he said.
