Robert Redford, a beloved actor known for his work in movies such as Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Sting and All the President’s Men, has died at 89 years old. The longtime actor, producer and director died on Sept. 16 at his residence in the mountains outside of Provo, Utah.
Cause of Death for Robert Redford
Publicist Cindi Berger announced Redford’s death in a public statement. She shared some information about his passing but also requested to respect the family’s privacy.
“Robert Redford passed away on Sept. 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah — the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved,” Berger, chairman and CEO of Rogers & Cowan PMK, said in a public statement. “He will be missed greatly. The family requests privacy.”
While no cause of death was given, Berger did give the New York Times a statement saying that he died in his sleep.
Redford became one of Hollywood’s biggest actors in the 1970s. In 2002, he received an honorary Oscar and gave a speech stating, “I’ve spent most of my life just focused on the road ahead, not looking back. But now tonight, I’m seeing in the rearview mirror that there is something I’ve not thought about much, called history.”
Redford’s biggest role, arguably, was as the Sundance Kid in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid with Paul Newman.
“I was being put up for Butch Cassidy because I’d done the comedy. But that part didn’t interest me,” Redford told the outlet Collider in 2019. “What interested me was the Sundance Kid, because I could relate to that based on my own experience and particularly my own childhood and feeling like an outlaw most of my life.”
He added, “So I told [director] George [Roy Hill], and he knew Paul really well and knew he was much more like Butch Cassidy, so George turned it all around. He went to Paul and they argued a bit until Paul finally realized that George was right. He was well known and I wasn’t, which is why they switched the title, too”
Mr. Redford’s final acting roles, according to the New York Times, included Our Souls at Night in 2017 and The Old Man and the Gun in 2018. It’s incredible that he was acting in films up into his 80s. Our hearts and prayers are with Redford’s family during this difficult time.
