Four polls released in October did not detect the victory of Rodrigo Paz Pereira, who won Sunday’s presidential election in Bolivia by 9.2 points. 97.86% of the votes were counted, the candidate of the Christian Democratic Party received 54.6%, while former President Jorge Quiroga obtained 45.4%, the opposite of what opinion studies indicated.
In the first round, Paz Pereira came first with 32.6% of the votes, when the polls did not even consider him likely to compete in the second round. The future President will be responsible for the country’s new political phase, after 20 years of the Movement to Socialism (MAS), led by former President Evo Morales (2006-19), with a model of a closed, state-owned economy based on subsidies, thanks to gas exports whose reserves have practically been exhausted.
