Ron Howard Reveals the Surprising Way He Sneaks His Wife Into All of His Films

Ron Howard’s career as a director has included everything from fantasy films such as Splash and Willow to the Academy Award-winning A Beautiful Mind, but there’s been one constant in all of it: His wife, Cheryl, has appeared in nearly all of his scripted films in some capacity.

In an interview with People magazine, Howard, who married Cheryl during his Happy Days heyday in 1975, said, “Cheryl’s either played a small part with a line or two or just been an extra in everything I’ve done since we met, going back to my Super 8 filmmaking days.”

Spotting his wife in his films is “kind of like Where’s Waldo?,” he added. “She shows up. If you know what you’re looking for, you can find her.”

“She was a bartender in The Paper,” Howard told the outlet. “John Candy dropped coins and looked up her skirt in Splash. She was a nun watching the launch in Apollo 13. … She was a peasant woman tackled by Nockmaar villains in Willow. She was a nurse in Hillbilly Elegy, and she was a teacher in A Beautiful Mind.”

In Howard’s latest film, the true crime thriller, Eden, his wife of 50 years donned a wig and mustache to play a male food server in a scene on a desert island.

A glance at Cheryl Howard’s IMDb page shows she also popped up as a “reporter with brown hat” in her husband’s 1975 film Grand Theft Auto, a girl kissing her boyfriend in Night Shift (1982), a science fair coordinator in Ransom (1996), and a “person at book signing lecture” in The Da Vinci Code.  She even made a cameo as a Who in the live-action remake of How the Grinch Stole Christmas in 2000.

Ron Howard Considers His Wife His Good Luck Charm

Howard has described his wife as his “good luck charm,” and once noted “she has been in everything” that he directed since “11th grade in high school.” He has also admitted that it’s gotten to the point where he is superstitious that Cheryl must appear in at least one frame in all of his movies.

In 2018, Howard had a glitch while making the film Solo: A Star Wars Movie when he had to cut the initial scene his wife was in out of the movie.

In an interview with Today, he said, “It was a little pricey. We had to green screen her into Solo. I cut the scene she was in, and I felt bad about it. Cheryl doesn’t care. But I care. It’s my only superstition. Let’s get a green screen and drop her into a shot.”

“She’s my lucky charm,” he added.
